How can I propagate amaryllis from the seed pod and Gerberas from seed?

"This University of Nebraska Web site on the Culture of Amaryllis has this to say about seed propagation:

http://www.ianr.unl.edu...

"Amaryllis can be propagated by seed, offsets or cuttage. Since seeds do not always produce plants similar to their parents, most named hybrids and selected strains are propagated by cuttage. Seed pods of amaryllis develop rapidly and are mature within 4 to 5 weeks after the flower has been pollinated. Pods should be picked as soon as they turn yellow and begin to break open. Seeds should be removed from the pod, allowed to dry for a few days and planted immediately. The seed bed should be partially shaded, and the media used for seed germination should be well drained. Following germination, increase the light until the plants are receiving full sunlight."

The link below has great instructions on how to propagate your amaryllis by seed, and pics on how to pollinate them yourself. You may be able to produce a completely different and wonderful variety yourself!

The information the other answerers gave on propagating Gerber Daisy was right on, and great info, so I'll leave it at that.

Happy Gardening!

How can I propagate amaryllis from the seed pod and Gerberas from seed?
After the pod is dry, crack it apart-- be prepared for lots and lots of seeds-- If you live in Florida or California-- choose a spot outside in the sun, mark it well and plant the seeds-- the seeds with the darkest brown seem to be stronger-- you'll see when you open the pod-- baby them along and you'll find out just what you have-- If you hand pollinate the bloom you can "mix" the colors-- and then you wait-- what seems to be forever.

I planted my seeds helter skelter-- just wanted to know if I could do it-- but I didn't have enough patience to wait 8 years!

I would handle the Gerberas like cone flower, zinnias or daisys and tick seed.

If the Gerberas seed heads will come apart in your hands-- do that over newspaper-- spread out the seed head- if there are seeds you'll be able to tell which is a seed-- seeds are fatter and usually darker than the dried petals-- the darker the seed the stronger-- at least that's been my experience.

good luck-- remember to mark where you put them!
Reply:Well, gerbera I cannot answer with out researching the Internet myself. I have tried to seed Amaryllis, I was almost 100% successful with the seeds germinating from pod to tiny plant.

I waited about 8 years for the new bulb to be mature enough to bloom for me. Oh well, I got nothing better to do...Kidding!

Now I am curious, I will have to research Gerbera. I always have bought plug trays from some one else! Thanks for the motivation to learn something!

Reply:Most of those like lots of sun- Lantana, Dusty Miller, Pentas, Marigolds,Diathus, Salvia Tomatoes, Petunias- and they don't need a lot of water.

The guy ahead of me said they were annuals but here in Calif. A lot of them are perrenials.

How to prepare bed for gerbera cultivation in Indian Climate under polygreenhouse?

I just recieved a lovely Gerbera daisy plant as a gift but in has already started to wilt and become droopy?

This happened in just a day, I set it out on the porch last night so it could get some direct sun in the morning. Around 7:30 in the morning I walked out to see it starting to come back up to life however by mid afternoon it had returned to it's wilted state. The soil still seems moist and I have not watered it since I recieved it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

I just recieved a lovely Gerbera daisy plant as a gift but in has already started to wilt and become droopy?
water it. Indirect sunlight till it comes back.
Reply:If there is foil around your plant take it off as it is sitting in water trapped in the foil. Too much water will kill quicker than not enough. They can take full sun once they are established, they also do not like to be moved once you plant them in the ground. EDIT: Being an all knowing rude person to others will surely make plants grow.
Reply:u musta be kidding me. u took a plant from store and put it under direct sun light and asking what is wrong? it is dying from shock, this is what is wrong. u never ever take plants from inside and put them under direct sun for the whole day. u start from shadowy place for some minutes first, then for some hours, then u put it from shadowy place under open sun for a few minutes, then for a few hours and u never ever put house plants under direct sun. never. there re special plants which like open sun, they re rare, gerbera is not the one. and another thing to those who adviced to replant it into another pot - u do not replant into another pots right after bringing a plant to your house. u put it first out of direct sun light for a few days, then to a spot where u intend it to be and wait a few days. a plant is a living thing, it should adapt to a new enviroment. if u start replanting it right away u give it too much shock. sure it might survive, but mostly it won't
Reply:If it was in a store pot, you should transplant it into a new pot, preferable ceramic, about 1 1/2 times as big as the current pot. If a plant becomes root-bound it will die. Also, the pots that plants typically come in do not hold water well.

How do I look after a pot gerbera?

The flowers have died but there appears to be several smaller stems with buds on, will these grow into flowers? do I need to remove the larges leaves around the plant?

How do I look after a pot gerbera?
They need to be kept in maximum light and also fairly dry. They are susceptible to root rot and fungi, so be careful not to keep them in the shade or in a dark, warm room. They tend to be fairly heavy feeders, too. Slow release fertilizers such as Osmocote 14-14-14 may also be used in combination with liquid feeding. Avoid the use of high ammonia type fertilizers.

They can go down to 32 F and will regrow when it warms up. Try not to let them get down this low though.

If your gerberas are short-stemmed, or floppy at any time, make sure they are getting more sun and less water.

If you repot, make sure you use a good airy mixture of soil. Lots of peat or perlite in the mix is great. They will not stand wet roots! Also the crown of the plant needs to be about 1/2 inch above the soil when you repot.....this ensures they stay free and not root bound which could rot them.

Can white gerbera daisies be dyed blue? Ive seen the brigh blue on regular daisies can i get this on gerberas?

YES!!! Put blue food coloring in the water you put the flowers in. They will be blue in a matter of days!!

Can white gerbera daisies be dyed blue? Ive seen the brigh blue on regular daisies can i get this on gerberas?
To get the Aqua Blue you want you will either have to use Silk Flowers or get Design Master spray paint from your local craft store or floral supply shop and spray white gerbers. Design Master Spray Paint is designed to be used on fresh florals and won't harm them. I used two colors of blue on white mums for my sister's wedding as there were no blue flowers in December.

Flowers with blue bridesmaid dresses at an outdoor summer country (but not too country) wedding?

We are having an outdoor ceremony at a little country Bed and Breakfast this summer, and I want to find some flowers that are not too formal, but not too country (a.k.a. wildflowers). I love wildflowers, but I want this to be just a notch above being that country and simple. It is my wedding, after all! :)

I love daisies, roses, sweet pea (that's what my mom has always called me), sunflowers, ranunculus, gerbera daisies, and mini calla lilies. I was just going to go with white flowers because the contrast with the blue dresses would be pretty. The color also has to look okay with the red roof on the B%26amp;B (but no red flowers please, just colors that would look okay and not clash with the red roof since we are thinking about having the ceremony leading up the steps of the house.)

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. Pictures EVEN BETTER!!! :)

THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!

callalillies are amazing...

they have a darkpink center, and really catch the eye, they are not to formal for country, but not too country either.
Reply:Hi

Here are some tips on country styling that might help. There are also wedding flowers galleries for bouquet and decoration ideas on the site.

Country styling can be casual, think of flowers just picked from the garden - beautifully soft subtle colours and fragrance. Imagine masses of old-fashioned pink and white garden roses, combined with peonies - pretty feminine and romantic.

Don’t forget foliage too - the reason cottage gardens look so right is that they have plenty of green between the flowers. Variegated ivy trails and umbrella fern would be delicate enough to suit the theme and add a welcome relaxing note of green. The elegantly weeping tails of green hanging amaranthus, or love lies bleeding, looks remarkably right when used in relaxed arrangements. Molucella (bells of Ireland) with a faint lovely rice-pudding scent also adds a cool touch of green". Adding herbs to your wedding flowers also add interesting texture as well as fragrance and a country garden appeal. Tuck a rosemary or lavender sprig into your napkins as well as including in the wedding flowers to carry the theme through.

Try tone on tone - use different shades from the same colour range to add extra depth and interest to your arrangements try Hydrangeas, Delphinium and Lavender together Hydrangeas look lovely and you can get these as pot plants or as cut flowers; they come in blues, whites, pinks and pale green and their huge flower heads have real impact."
Reply:Swan River Daisies. Light blue, 5 inch stems. But a florist might have a hard time finding enough.

I just planted some perennial daisies. They receive lots and lots of sun. Why are they wilted?

The soil seems moist underneath. Earlier this year I planted gerbera daisies and they also wilted and died. Morewater or less water??

I just planted some perennial daisies. They receive lots and lots of sun. Why are they wilted?
Did you plant Shasta daisies? Shastas:

1. need at least 5 hours of full sun daily.

2. need almost daily watering.

3. do not like heavy, poorly-drained soil.

4. like soil rich in organic matter (compost or manure).

5. have shallow root systems; this is why you must water frequently and fertilize with organic matter.

6. like to be mulched; it helps conserve their water.

Usually, Shastas wilt and droop dramatically when they need water. I know you mentioned their soil seemed moist, but you might try more water. I use Shasta daisies all over my property and have always had luck in full sun, rich soil, and lots of water and mulch. If you get them established, they don't need quite as much water the next year, and they do spread!
Reply:They are probably suffering from transplant shock, they should be okay just keep watering since they are newly transplanted. Gerbera daisies are another story - I can't grow them, they are too finicky.
Reply:idk
Reply:Almost all my perennials wilt for a time when I first plant them. I'm told they are establishing root systems and are going through a shock phase. All mine(including daisies),have done great this next year. Suggested watering is a good!! soaking every three or four days when it's very warm outside. You could also go to Nature Hills Nursery.com. They have a wonderful site. A question and answer forum too. Good Luck, and happy gardening!!!!
Reply:It is OK. Cut off the dead stems, they'll come back next spring

Getting married in Sept. Having gerbera bouquets for the girls...?

The colors I'm using are a deeper yellow, burgundy(dress color) and a deeper orange. Do you think it's a good choice of color?

Getting married in Sept. Having gerbera bouquets for the girls...?
Sounds absolutely gorgeous! I would advise considering leaving out the burgundy - it may not be the right match for the dresses and wind up looking a little "off". See if the florist has ribbon that will match the dresses and pull the burgundy in that way. See if there is another color available that will compliment the burgundy.

congrats %26amp; good luck!
Reply:Yes I think the colors will be really pretty. My niece had Gerber daiseys for her bouquets and they were really pretty. She had all different colors and then just tied in a bunch with nothing else with them.

Daisies (both yellow and white) with which pink or fuchsia flower?

Sorry, again but this time for the people in the garden section. I want flower arrangements with yellow and white daisies (the little ones not gerberas) but also a pink or fuchsia flower. I think they need a hint of color... Any recomendations? Thanks.

Daisies (both yellow and white) with which pink or fuchsia flower?
you can add gerberas for extra colour and I think they would look nice with "normal" daisies

carnations are also nice (I don't like bunches of carnations alone but mixed they add nice colour)

snapdragons are interesting looking and colourful

sweet peas are adorable

with daises I would add something "natural" looking, I think something like an orchid would look wrong together
Reply:if lilacs are in bloom they would be grand; if not, a few pink roses
Reply:Daisies are small flowers so think small. I wouldn'tv choose fuchia because it will kill the delicate look of the daisies
Reply:The best way that I have to add this color in this type of format with these flowers is:

Use a clear vase with the glass colored beads in the color that you are striving for.

However, you could possiblely use maybe carnations that have been dyed.

I'm having glass bubble bowls with a Gerbera bloom for our centerpieces on the tables....?

Would a round mirror look better underneath, or square??

I'm having glass bubble bowls with a Gerbera bloom for our centerpieces on the tables....?
Round. Keep the same lines going, the bubbles and the bowls are round, therefore a curved mirror underneath would look best. A square mirror might look too harsh. You could do something like rounded corners or ovals depending on the other shapes.
Reply:depends. if you want to draw the attention to the centerpieces, use the square (and maybe get some vase gems or pebbles to lightly scatter around the edge of the bowl and just a sprinkle in the bottom of the bowl). If you want it to be harmonious, use the round.

congrats %26amp; good luck!
Reply:Round sounds good.

I have tried slug %26amp; snail killers, beer in a shallow dish, %26amp; egg shells but nothing seems to get rid of these pests in my garden and they are killing my Gerberas!!!

What is the best way to kill snails %26amp; slugs when poisons arent working?
"Diatomaceous Earth" Tiny skeletons decomposed and ground into a powder form, to you and I it feels like baby powder to crawling pest it is like crawling on cut glass. Seeing how it is a powder it sticks well to your plant, sprinkle in all around and dust your plants with it I WILL work, and it will not harm your beneficial insects. You can find it at any garden center it is organic and actually provides a little nutrients as well

God Bless

Reply:rock salt
Reply:SALT,BUT IT IS KIND OF A CRUEL WAY TO DO IT.
Reply:salt
Reply:I hear regular table salt works well.
Reply:My best advice is to get the slug and snail killer, it comes in little pellets... you have to repeat treatment every six weeks. The reason why you have to repeat treatment is because the snails go through different phases in their lives. While you kill the adults, the ones that are eggs when you spread the pellets will come out in about 4-6 weeks later, that's when you spread a second time. You will see results in 3-5 days. You just have to be very careful if you have pets or small children. Remember, snails and slugs come with your plants when you get them from the nursery, also they hide under rocks, lawn furniture, stairs, any nook and crannies... so trying to get them with salt is impossible, it's a lot of fun to see these ugly things suffer when you sprinkle salt on them, but is not really practical doing that. Another alt. method to keep snails away is to visit your local farmer's market, or maybe local nursery; they have a snail that will eat the eggs and babies of the snails that eat your plants... this will take a little longer to work. So if you want immediate results, the pellets are the best.
Reply:I heard salt works
Reply:I have a slug problem from time to time in my flower beds, I dig a shallow hole, put a shallow bowl in it and pour some beer into it. The slugs are attracted to the yeast, and they get in it and drown, or get so drunk they die. Any way it works.
Reply:try salt. trowl a small trench around your garden, pour salt in. make sure that you have removed all the snails and slugs from the area. they should die when more try to get in. it takes dilagence, good luck
Reply:table salt will to the trick...
Reply:did you bury the dish? if you dig a hole that fits the dish filled with beer the slugs fall in but can't get out...another option is over turning all of the rocks %26amp; bricks in your garden and manually remove them you can throw them onto the black top or in the sun or just squish them. Egg shells dont do anything to prevent slugs. thier slime protects them from the egg shells.
Reply:cut a beer can (it has to be a beer can) about 1.5 inches from the bottom (with scissors) CAREFUL!! and put 1 inch of beer into it. Leave this sitting in you r garden (where the pests are) and they will go have their last beer.
Reply:salt works good, just don't let it get on your plants. Make a line around them.
Reply:Put an old beer can with some old stale beer in the garden they are attracked to it and they can not get out of the beer can.
Reply:Try placing a band of copper around the flower garden or pot that contains the Gerberas. You can purchase the bands at nurseries and they work quite well. Anything that has sharp edges also works as it destroys the underside of the little buggers and they die so course bone meal products or course bits of sea shells will do the trick. I personally use the bait tactic. I place a large amount of commercial slug/snail bait under a structure of rocks, bricks or a lawn ornament which allows the bugs in for a dinner of death but keeps the kids and dogs out. Works beautifully.
Reply:How often did you do the beer thing? You have to continue doing it for awhile. Once a long time ago, I had a bad slug problem in my garden. I did the beer thing for probably at least a couple of weeks. Little by little, there were fewer and fewer slugs in the dish until they were pretty much all gone.

Also, are you able to manipulate the pH of your soil at all, or will that screw up your plants? Adding lime to the soil is also a good way to get rid of them, but it will alter your soil acidity so should be done with caution.
Reply:The garden guy from NPR has 13 ways to stop slugs. Here is a link to his page on getting rid of them. Hope it helps!

What kind of flower would look look good with gerbera daisies in my bridal bouquet?

I really like the idea of a simple bouquet. We are having a formal wedding inside a historical mansion. I'm not a flowery type person. I love the look of a dark red gerbera daisy bouquet, but would like to mix in another flower the same color that the men could wear as boutonnieres. I'm afraid if they have gerbera daisies on it would look huge, clownish, like water might squirt out of it.(even the small ones look too big) Would roses the same color look good? I really am looking for all one color.

What kind of flower would look look good with gerbera daisies in my bridal bouquet?
I think roses or tulips would look fabulous, and using some type of filler (baby's breath, as another poster mentioned).

Here's a pic of a nice gerbera/rose bouquet I found:

Reply:I think that roses look good. Before I finished reading your question I was thinking roses in my mind. If you are looking for small flowers to mix in with it though, that would just set it off. Babys breath would look really nice to give a little accent. Good luck, Congratulations, and hope this helps!
Reply:I would go for deep roses and loads of dark green foliage.

You can add contrast with limey green foliage as well. alchemilia mollis looks wonderful (ladies mantle) instead of gyp / baby breath

For your groom I would suggest a double rose and foliage.
Reply:Yes roses would look great! Other red flowers are Anthuriums, Freesias,Tulips, and Alstroemeria

Gerbera management in greenhouse?

Gerbera plants were planted in 4 litre pots filled with pumice and supplied via a fully automated installation with nutrient solution prepared by replenishing the drain solution with nutrients and water. The addition of nutrients and water to the drain solution was based on real time measurements of its volume and electrical conductivity. This data was utilized by a computer controlled system to automatically calculate and add to the drain solution as many nutrients and water as needed to achieve a target electrical conductivity in the supply solution. In each watering application, the entire volume of drain solution collected after the previous watering application was reused.

Replenishment of the drain solution with nutrients was based on addition of concentrated fertilizer solutions. The nutrient ratios in the concentrates were so arranged that, after diluting them at a particular ratio with tap water without addition of drain solution, a reference nutrient solution having a composition recommended as optimal for the supply solution could be obtained. However, since the drain solution was recycled, the actual nutrient concentrations in the supply solution could not be identical to those of the reference nutrient solution. After about 9 months of nutrient solution recycling according to the above method, nutrient solution samples were collected from all watering applications of one day and from both the supply solution and the drainage. The results indicated that the K/Ca, Mg/Ca and P/(SO42-+NO3-) ratios in the reference nutrient solution should be higher than the values suggested for the supply solution.

Gerbera species bear a large capitulum with striking, 2-lipped ray florets in yellow, orange, white, pink or red colors. The capitulum, which has the appearance of a single flower, is actually composed of hundreds of individual flowers. The morphology of the flowers varies depending on their position in the capitulum.

Gerbera is very popular and widely used as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. The domesticated cultivars are mostly a result of a cross between Gerbera jamesonii and another South African species Gerbera viridifolia. The cross is known as Gerbera hybrida. Thousands of cultivars exist. They vary greatly in shape and size. Colours include white, yellow, orange, red, and pink. The centre of the flower is sometimes black. Often the same flower can have petals of several different colours.

Gerbera is commercially important. It is the fifth most important cut flower in the world (after rose, carnation, chrysanthemum, and tulip). It is also used as a model organism in studying flower formation.

Gerbera contains naturally occurring coumarin derivatives.

When can i do my centerpieces?

i'm doing my own centerpieces for my wedding. i'm just placing loose stems of various flowers into vases w/ water. gerberas, spider mums, and orchids. my flowers will be shipped to me thurs. should i put them in the vases thurs, fri, or sat?

When can i do my centerpieces?
The Gerber's are pretty hardy and so are the mums and the orchids (as long as they're still on the stem). I'd put them in buckets filled with water (keep the leaves out of the water or they'll make the water yukky) and place them in a cool, dark place. Then put them together in the vases the night before the reception or the morning of ...that way they'll look their best. Sounds lovely!

Why did my gerbera daisy wilt overnight?

My boyfriend brought me home a potted gerbera daisy plant. Yesterday it looked really good, lots of flowers, several new blooms, and lots of big green leaves. I know nothing about plants so I went to a website and did everything it said. I put a few drops of plant food on the soil, watered it (but not directly in the crown), misted the leaves alittle, and had the heat on low. Well I woke up the next day and the whole thing has wilted! The blooms look okay but the stems and leaves look pathetic. What did I do to it??

Why did my gerbera daisy wilt overnight?
The main question is - if you have snow in your area with cold temperatures was the plant wrapped up properly upon coming to your house. Also, you water the plant from the dish below and remove the excess water after an hour.

Were to buy these silk gerbera daisies?

I've already checked afloral and save-on-crafts- they are both sold out (if you try to add the ones in the link to your cart, it gives you a sold out error).

I'm in a bit of a panic, because I want to use purple gerberas for my bridesmaids' bouquets.

Suggestions/help would be appreciated! :-)

Were to buy these silk gerbera daisies?
if you can't find actual purple, do the next best thing. get white and tint them with floral spray. This is what we did fairly often when I worked for a florist, and now that i am on my own doing special event flowers, I've kept this trick handy and will actually be tinting some peach ones orange next month for a wedding I'm doing.

heres some white ones---

http://www.save-on-crafts.com/gerbera5.h...

and heres a link to a site with the sprays, they have several shade of purple spray, so you could maybe get a few and blend them to give a more natural look. When you go to spray them, put a nickle or a quarter or something round that fits the shape of the center of the daisiy over the center and lightly mist it until you get the effect your looking for. Ive never had problems with it rubbing off either. This site asks for a company, but I just put Ashley's flowers in there and they let it go, I don't have a tax number on theres so obviously they are flexible-

http://www.yourterra.com/productdetails....

I highly reccomend both sites, I got the silk pink gerbs for my topiaries that I used as centerpeices from save on crafts, and I get all my supplies from terra....would be a good place to get tape and foam and anything else you need to do your flowers. Any problems Ive had which have been few were fixed as soon as I called and let them know.

good luck!

oh and yes, real gerbs don't come in purple, and it is difficult to get them to look realistic, but the save on crafts ones are great, I had a girl about flip on me and ask me why I had made my centerpeices 2 months before the wedding, didn't I know they were gonna die?! yea, she felt pretty dumb when I explained they were fake, lol!

Red %26amp; White gerbera daisy bridal bouquets? COMBO not just one or the other? PLEASE POST PICTURES?
I've been googling and can't seem to find any. So many gerbera bouquets but none in red and white.

I found this in pink and white, I know it's not what you wanted but so far it's the closest. Red would look just as nice though.

Why do my plants keep dying on me?

i have some plants (2 gerberas, 1 tulip, 1 miniature rose) in my room which i put near the window pane. i water them everyday and trim them once in a month. but it seems that they are not happy. their leaves turn yellow and they stop flowering.

what should i do?

Why do my plants keep dying on me?
Leaves turning yellow is a 'sure sign' of overwatering.

Make sure you have plenty of root room in the pot and only water once a week by placing your plants in the shower for a few minutes and let all the water drain.

One more thing: some of my plants are doing much better without direct sunlight. for example , my spider plant used to get those little burnt tips ..but not anymore.
Reply:Your Welcome (: Report It

Reply:When a plants leaves turn yellow, you are watering too much. If they get leggy and spindly looking, they need more light. Hold down the water to once a week. Only warm water, not cold. Only feed when they are in blooming season,or three times a year. Byee
Reply:Slow down on the water ---- too much.

+++Spock+++
Reply:looks like too much of water and a lack of direct sunlight. the glass will block all the rays of the sun.
Reply:To make them happy play melodious music close to where they are.......it has been tried with success
Reply:indoor palnts need three things ... water .. sunlight .. plant food .. the yellowing indicates it needs more light ...

Can someone tell me everything I need to know about a year round garden?

I live in NC. What would be some good plants to get? Should I buy them already grown from the nursery, or get seeds? How should I maintain the garden? For example, I know gerbera daisies are perrinials in NC, but what do I do when they die? Mow them over? Will they just grow back the next year? I've already got regular shrubs, but I want something that blooms. Any info would be appreciated! :)

Can someone tell me everything I need to know about a year round garden?
of course we can't on this site, buy or borrow some books, or go down the library. there are hundreds.
Reply:My first impulse, which I'm going to go with, is to say:

"No"

Because no one knows "everything" there is to know about gardening. Even people who have been gardening for decades are always learning new things.

That said, Start small. A novice gardener who puts in a HUGE garden is likely to be quickly overwhelmed, and be left with a dissatisfying feeling, and will be more inclined to give up on the whole shebang.

Grow a few things you like. Start with plants first. Starting seeds inside is a whole learning curve in itself. You can always pick that up later. Herbaceous perennials (ones that die to the ground in winter), you can remove the tops when they turn brown, just for aesthetics, but you don't have to.

Browse your local garden center or nursery. Ask questions, look at plants, be inspired, and only do one new thing at a time. (or maybe two)
Reply:Your best bet is to visit local gardeners and find out what works in their gardens. Most gardeners are flattered to be asked about their gardens, the problem is getting them to STOP, haha. Buy some plants that are already established for some "instant gratification" but also get a few seeds and try growing your own plants "from babies." Try Dragonfly Perennials in Cary, NC (on the web at Local.com) or Messenbrink's Perennials in Nashville, NC. Every yard has "microclimates" that will affect any plantings-closer to a house is more protected, less likely to frost, so you could put a more delicate flower. Far from the house or out in the middle of a yard is unprotected so you need more durable plants. Even the water flow and how much you can and will water make a difference in what you can grow. Another great source of information is a local university that has a Master Gardener program or a landscaping program. They are usually very good about giving out advice! Good luck!

Why Gerbera Flower grower don't get good market rates ?

Now a days from last one year Gerbera Flower (grower) are not getting goods rates for there flowers, is it due to saturation or low rate of Export of gerbera than Roses. it is getting difficult to the Grower to manage the expenses of fertilizer, and insecticides prices. Wht would b the best solution.

Why Gerbera Flower grower don't get good market rates ?
diversity helps.

finding an energy crop makes sense.

if you are outside the USA, consider hemp for fiber and oil, i hear its the highest yield per acre.

Every ounce of natural fiber made into rope/etc is an ounce less petrolium needed to make synthetic rope.

Consider growing seed crops under contract for seed companies.

best wishes for your success

Gerbera Daisies & boutonnieres & corsages???

I'm doing all of my own flowers and I'm mainly using Gerbera daisies %26amp; hydrangeas for my wedding bouquet and for the Bridesmaids. However, they are too large for corsages and boutonnières so I don't know what flower to use. Does anyone have a somewhat inexpensive idea? Also, my colors are alternating BM dresses of Wine %26amp; Dark purple.. what color gerberas would look good in a September wedding? I was thinking opposite gerbera daisies for the BM, but I'm afraid since they are both dark colors they'll drowned each other out.. any suggestions?

Gerbera Daisies %26amp; boutonnieres %26amp; corsages???
For the the boutonnieres you could always use carnations. They are a fairly inexpensive flower, and they look nice. Here is an example of what the carnation boutonneire's and corsages would look like...

http://www.vogueflowers.com/images/thumb...

http://www.filgifts.com/images/product/s...

As for the BM's...you said that you had them in alternating colors, which will look beautiful, do you also want them to have alternating bouquets? Or would you prefer they all had the same bouquets?

For the BM bouquets you could get the white gerbera daisies, then add in some different color carnations (they come in a purple color...you could add a burgundy or mauve color to the bouquet as well). Mums are also in season, and that is a fairly affordable flower as well. You may also want to look into the mini gerbera daisies as well as the mini carnations.

I hope that this helps! Good luck :)
Reply:A single gerbera daisy looks silly for a boutonniere, just so you know. Better to use several mini asters - they look very close, and come in beautiful fall colors.
Reply:I'm getting married in November... and our colors are burgundy and gold/yellow... both of which are Gerbera colors. We've decided to use regular Gerberas for the bridesmaids to carry... and mini gerberas and simply use 1 flower for the guys. Gerberas come in great and bright colors! So... have lots of fun with it!!
Reply:Use mini-gerbera daisies for the men. That's what I'm doing for my FH. I'm having a hand tied bouquet of red gerbera daisies, and he's having a red mini boutonnière.

Good luck, and Congratulations!
Reply:Why not use the hydrangeas for the corsages and boutonnières?

Gerbera Daisy Wedding Help Please!?!?!?!?!?!?

I am planning a Gerbera daisy wedding. My colors are pink and orange. I read that certain colors of gerbera daisies bloom at certain times of the year and I was wondering when pink and orange daisies bloom and if they would be ready in time for a june 21st wedding. and also I was wondering if they aren't ready and i decide to use artificial flowers where is a good place i can get pink and orange gerbera daisies without them looking too fake? if you know what I mean. I would really appericate the help. and any ideas for favors or decorations would really help too. Thanks

Gerbera Daisy Wedding Help Please!?!?!?!?!?!?
My friend used orange and pink gerbera daisies and her wedding was the first weekend of July, so you should be fine. Most flowers are grown in green houses anyways (I think). I would recommend not using fake daisies. They normally look quite fake and you don't need to use many of the daisies because they are quite large.

Congrats %26amp; Good luck.

Also, if you're really worried about it, contact a local florist and ask them, they should know the answer.
Reply:Yes, they will be available to you at that date. Go to the link I posted and it will tell you all about any flower you want to know about. theknot is great!!
Reply:You have to check with the florists in your city. They will know availability.

I had this problem with calla lillies - always wanted them, but the florist couldn't guarantee them for our July wedding.
Reply:If you check out sams club.com they have all colors of the gerbera daisies and they are sooo cheap. Granted you have to buy a membership..but if you knwo of anyone that has one its a great investment.
Reply:They should definitely be ready by that date - we have gerbera daisies in our front yard since they're my favorite. But if you're worried about it, Thrifty Florist usually sells these super cute fake ones that would work great too. If you don't have one of those nearby you can also find fake gerberas online at http://www.afloral.com/Silk-Flowers-Arti... in all different colors.

I love gerberas myself! I don't think there should be a problem with those colors by June for fresh flowers. Again, I think you will be fine, but if you need artificial, check out places like Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Save-on-Crafts (internet site). Although, I really think the silk gerberas look really fake. Just my opinion though. Call the florist that you want to use and ask them this question (about specific colors). They are more than happy to answer your questions!

One note about gerberas....something I read and also witnessed. Do NOT use them for boutonnieres. Gerberas do not hold up well once cut and out of water. I was at a wedding this summer and they had gerbera boutonnieres and they were really wilted after only a few hours!
Reply:I used Gerbera daisies for my May 17 wedding. All colors were available via my florist.

How do you grow large Gerberas?

What are any gardening secrets to growing them

How do you grow large Gerberas?
the answer above mine is good...but for huge blooms pinch off all but one or two of the buds. this works for most plants.

also feed lightly every couple of weeks during the growing season.

hope this helps.
Reply:I have a few Gerbera Daisy's and mom just gave me this tip and I tried it and it worked.

Pinch off the inside leaves to allow the upcoming buds / flowers to get more sun. The flowers will continue coming and be beautiful, just like you know Gerbera's to be!

Also remember to cut off any spent flowers to give more strength to the new flowers.

Good luck!

Which would be cheapest for my wedding. Roses or Gerbera?

My wedding is this september and I cant decide which flower to use, so i have decided to go for whichever is cheapest!

I know roses are usually quite expensive but not sure about gerbera - look a bit like big daisies but are all one colour.

Which would be cheapest for my wedding. Roses or Gerbera?
Roses are still cheaper
Reply:You should use a combination of both!! Roses and Gerberas run less than $1 a stem wholesale. You should look for floral wholesalers in your area or online and compare prices that way - if you want to make the arrangements yourself. If you're going to get a professional to do your arrangements, then pick three who have done designs that you like - and compare prices. Every vendor has different connections so one could get roses cheaper while another could get gerberas cheaper.
Reply:gerbera
Reply:Gerbera daisies are inexpensive all year round. Roses are a mid range flower, less expensive than Calla lilies. If you really want roses, just get less of them - they are so dramatic. I had pink roses for my bouquet, my husband's boutoneirre, and close family's corsages. The rest of the bridal party and special guests had pink carnations. The carnations were inexpensive, hardy, and surprisingly pretty. (This was a summer wedding).
Reply:Gerberas are definitely cheaper.
Reply:I agree Gerbera
Reply:Talk to a good florist they will be able to help you the most. I am sure Gerbera's are cheaper though if they are in season!
Reply:roses run about $1.25 each gerberas are about .75 each. When you buy them in bulk you will get a better price. This is if you are making the bouquets yourself.
Reply:I also agree Gerbera either one you choose they are both beautiful.

FYI...I have reported the rude individual who left you that nasty message!
Reply:Gerbera are less expensive. They come in many different colors and with the large flowers can be very striking and beautiful in a bouquet and/or centerpiece.
Reply:Roses come in about every color you can possibly imagine now and are available year round. If you buy them in bluk they can be as cheap as 2 a stem. The problem with roses for me is everybody does them and when you get several hundred in a room the smell can get pretty overpowering.

Geberas are pretty close to price in roses. IMO they seem to last longer than roses. The drawback the them is they are pretty casual so wouldn't look righ at a back-tie wedding and you are usually limited to reds, oranges, yellows, or whites.

Talk with you florist about a flower called a peonie. They are cheaper here and similar in look to roses and come in just as many colors, however, they arent' as formal.
Reply:Gerberas are cheaper and seem to be in vogue at the moment....personally I dont like them. They remind me of old grandmas as in our area all the crusty old ladies grew them. Lol ....but most people love them and think they are gorgeous so I would go with them. I am positive they are much cheaper than roses, and you could always get your granny to grow some for you. lol. Good luck with your day!

Oh and someone needs to report that rude person up above. He is just nasty.
Reply:are you doing silk or real? Silks right now are the same price, But, you should order soon, as the Gerber will go up in price.

poison ivy

Where can I find these and what do they go best with?

I'm looking for silk burgundy Gerbera Daisies for a wedding bouquet. Can anyone help me find some??? Also, what filler flowers would go best with them?

Thanks!

BTW, our colors are Chocolate, Ivory, and Burgundy.

Where can I find these and what do they go best with?
Certainly even Silks have green in/around them, and you might try a color wheel to determine complimentary and contrasting colors to Burgundy.

It sounds like your choices will be in various shade ranges of teh Burgundy, adding whites or ivories in flowers, or babys breath, etc.

Without knowing the dominant Dress color, I'd suggest the flowers be noticeable when carried, not strictly blend in with the dress.
Reply:any ones you choose it your wedding and you should try wilkinsons for silky daises
Reply:A large craft store should have them. I would mix ivory with them as brown flowers would look dead.

Why silk though, why not real?

How much do I charge for sugar paste (gumpaste) flowers?

Hi!

I have a custom cake business and make sugar flowers for many of my cakes. I make flowers anywhere from tiny buds to gerbera daisies, orchids, roses, hibiscus, etc. How do I know what to charge for these flowers? The larger ones take a really long time to make... some over an hour, and some have to sit overnight before you can continue making them. I don't want to overcharge or have my customers freak out when I give them pricing. But, I also don't want to undercharge for flowers that I really took time and care into making. They do turn out very pretty and I'm always very proud of the work I do, I just want to be fair in what I charge my customers. Thank you!

How much do I charge for sugar paste (gumpaste) flowers?
This is a battle with yourself as much as with 'what the market will bear'. Sit yourself down of a dull Sunday afternoon and -- quite ruthlessly -- tot up every second of your time, every grain of your ingredients, every therm of your overheads, and do the math. Cost yourself out realistically: if you know that your xyz Orchid is your flagship craftobject which few could match, take a hard look at the skill set you're using to make it, and set an hourly charge for that, and don't be bashful!

Let me give you an example. Our flagship cake we charge out at $450 per 5kg unit. Two craftsmen work two full days to make it. 45% of the charge is raw ingredient cost and fuel, so out of the rest (55%) we have to fund the craftsmen (myself and my sous), the overheads, the packaging (if relevant), transportation, and all the sundry costs of running a business, and then **make a profit**. What seems like a shocking cost to the customer suddenly 'don't look so rosy any more'..? Until we did the 'dull Sunday' maths, we were quite cheerfully making a 12% straight loss on all that work, and we didn't even realise that. It's kinda thrilling to be asked to perform your best..? %26lt;wry smile%26gt;

There will probably be items you make that you know are not making a high demand on your skill set: price those competitively. (Know what things you can afford to 'take a hit on'.) Be ruthlessly honest with yourself about the stuff that you sweat blood over. Not only will they make your reputation, but they will also be the items you are most inclined to compromise the charges for, in order to be able to do them at all. That's where a haemorrhage of money lurks, and you wont even notice, until... :-(

Hope this helps, but if you need more drop me a line whenever you need to. This is not easy stuff.
Reply:HERE IS A WEBSITE THAT MIGHT HELP YOU
Reply:You should, of course, charge for time involved in making them. Try taking a look around some cake decorating suppliers or a cake decorating page; see what they charge for ideas. Ornate and fancy flowers would cost more than a daisy, for instance. If you package them the cost of a box and tissue should also go into the factor.

Experience w/ Gerbera Daisies?

I am thinking about having our wedding flowers be multicolored Gerbera Daisies, and to save costs, I am going to be making the bouquets myself. Does anyone have experience with these flowers? If so, how do they hold up and how easy are they to work with?

We would be picking up the flowers the day before the wedding, and hopefully will be able to keep them in a fridge until when the wedding starts midmorning the next day.

Experience w/ Gerbera Daisies?
I think you are going to be fine. Daisies are very hardy flowers in general.

If you are worried about it do a trial run of one of the boquets with store-bought flowers and see how it goes.
Reply:My best friends sister in law got married 2 weeks ago and used gerbera daisies and my friend was a bridesmaid and her bouquet still looks like it was made yesterday so yes they hold up extremely well and are very beautiful, I'm definitely using them in my wedding.
Reply:gerber daiseys are not a good choice. even though they are so cute and fun looking, if you are making the bouquets yourself and have no floral experience you are in over your head. they grow in all directions and have weak stems. they are not strong enough to hold up in a bouquet. you would have to individually wire wrap every single stem which could take hours. if you have your heart set on having them it is do-able but i would suggest having them professionally made
Reply:They're lovely flowers and last really well. However, as others have said, their stems are strange. Anytime I've gotten them, the stems have been enclosed in a light green plastic tube (like a straw I guess), so they have some form. For a bouquet, you probably have to wire the stem somehow.
Reply:i had them in my bouquet. they lasted all day, but that's as long as i had them.

they are a lovely flower. sorry i've never worked w/ flowers though, but i imagine they're pretty easy to work with as far as flowers go. Do you have help with them? you may want to delegate this responsibility to someone else, if you trust anyone else's skills... as you'll be super busy.
Reply:They are fairly easy to work with. Keeping them in the fridge is a GREAT idea. I suggest simple hand-tied bouquets with this flower. Keep them cool until you have to take them out, they'll hold up better.
Reply:Gerberas have very tough stems and they grow crooked. They are hard to work with. I used Shasta Daisies, baby's breath and a few roses.
Reply:Gerberas are also my favourite! Great choice.

I suggest asking the flower shop to show you how to create a bouquet. They can be difficult and very time consuming to make. My friend tried to do this and ended up giving up and just went back to the flower shop to get them done. It's better to have the practice and professional advice (if you don't already know how to make bouquets, that is) than to be frustrated the day before your wedding.
Reply:These are my favorite flowers! I think that would be very pretty for a weddding!

They should hold up pretty well, they have a hollow stem, so stick a wire slighty underneath the head of the bloom, and wrap down the stem, afterwards go back and cover that with floral tape.

They'll do good in the fridge, they won't bruise easily, which is great, and they have a fairly good life span...

Congrats and Good Luck!

Gerbera daisies?
Gerberas do need full sun. They also need to remain moist. I suspect that it may be the pot that you are using. Terra cotta pots can wick the water from the soil rather rapidly.

You might also try using a water retentive additive, Polyacrylamide, in your potting soil. A highly organic potting soil is also useful.

Polyacrylamide is sold under many different names: Terra-Sorb ® , Hydrosource ®, Hydro-mulch, water crystals, PAM, copolymer, Moist Soil®, Aquasorb ®, Agrosoke®, Smart Soil ®, Aquacrystals™, Bioplex™, Agro-diamonds ®. These products look like tiny cubes of jello and are capable of absorbing great amounts of water. Mixed into your potting soil, the retain this water until your plants roots need it.
Reply:so simple just put them in sun and water them ,dont let them get dry and u can also use a fertilizer . miraclegro is a good fertilizer . or any other 20-20-20 formulated fertilizer.

good luck
Reply:Keep them watered well so that they do not dry out and when they bloom if the bloom is turning brown pluck off plant to keep it blooming. This is called deadheading . Gerbera daisys are sooooooo pretty .
Reply:What about them? They're fantastic flowers, treat as normal summer bedding, will not overwinter outdoors in the uk.

Gerbera Daisies?

I live in Zone 8, WA state, and I was wondering when to plant these bulbs? I am just now wanting to plant them in the beginning of June, but not sure if this is correct? Should I wait til next year? Any info?

Gerbera Daisies?
Your climate should allow you to plant them now. Gerbera daisies are very sensitive to heat... temperatures above 70 degrees seems to take a toll on them...where the stems will begin to wilt slightly.

Here are a couple of tips I can offer you;

Since Gerberas are very susceptible to root-rots, plant them on a slight mound of sterile planting mix. This will prevent the crowns from sitting in water and allow the area around it to dry out faster.

If possible, use a drip system/soaker hose. Overhead watering promotes diseases. Keep soil moist throughout the summer.

During summer months, place your plants where afternoon exposure to the sun is minimized....preferably filtered or partial sun is best. In the fall, winter and spring...full sun is okay.

Gerberas love fertilizer.....fertilize every other week with a soluble fertilizer AND apply a slow release fertilizer (I prefer using Osmocote 14-14-14 and apply it every three months).

Hope this information helps you to grow some beautiful gerbera daisies! GOOD LUCK!
Reply:You should have put them in the ground in April. Don't waste anymore time and plant away!

What's the best time to pick gerberas?

I have one growing that I want to pick and put in a vase, but when's the best time? When they are fully open?

What's the best time to pick gerberas?
When they are fully open, you can pick anytime.
Reply:it partially depends on which type of gerberas you have as there are around 30, but usualy when they are fully open (for me this was around autumn time)

I'm looking for a seamless background of solid gerbera daisies, preferrably multicolored. If I can't find one of solid flowers, I'd like different colored Gerberas scattered on a white background. I've looked all over and can't find what I want, and I'm wondering if anyone can give me any help.

What are the best plants to put oxygen back into atmosphere or using carbon dioxide?

I was told there are some "super" plants to have around the house for creating cleaner air. "gerbera" flower was one.

Also what are the 5 "super vegies"? Carrot, Broccoli and .. and .. and .. Should have at least any 3 of these every day

What are the best plants to put oxygen back into atmosphere or using carbon dioxide?
Spider plants are great for the air, they absorb a lot of CO2 and pollutants. Weeping fig and peace lilies are also great ones to have for the same reasons.

Also, your state Extension Service, from the university of your state, will have access to that information. Also, most garden catalogswill have photos and proper latin names. Burpee, Wayside Gardens, Territorial, Thompson and Morgan are a few that I know have online catalogs.

All i have been able to find out is that they are related to sunflowers

How do i get seeds form Gerberas?
Read the LINK below. It has total details about the flower and the seeds. It even provides you with pictures of what the seeds of this beauty look like.

I would have mistaken their seed for a dead fly! LOL

Can a gerbera daisy be dyed blue?

Or are there any pretty blue colored flowers that would be in season for an october wedding. Are hydrandras in season?

Can a gerbera daisy be dyed blue?
You can get hydrangeas, iris, delphinium, and a world of other blue flowers that should be in season. I wouldn't attemp dying gerberas. They are a very tempermental flower and are very difficult to tell if they are gonna last even if they haven't been altered. adding chemical dyes would most likely not be good for them, other flowers maybe, but prolly not gerberas. They make a spray paint that is specially made for tinting flowers. Your florist can get it. This would be far less harsh on the gerberas. Some florists refuse to do it, but many will if your paying!
Reply:Any flower can be dyed. I've seen blue dyed daisies at the grocery every spring/summer. As far I am aware, hydrangeas are the only naturally blue flowers. I don't know when they are in season though. The best thing to do is talk to a local florist about what you want.
Reply:you can dye almost any flower by adding blue dye to the water so that the flower "drinks" the water and the dye as well.
Reply:YES, THEY CAN AND CAN BE VERY PRETTY WHEN DONE RIGHT! I PUT IN A COUPLE WEB SITES THAT MIGHT HELP YOU! GOOD LUCK AND CONGRATS!
Reply:It can BUT be very aware that any dyed flower has the potential to "leak" the colour onto your beautiful wedding dress. My florist had people sign waivers after a girl in Winnipeg sued her florist over a wrecked dress.

I'd check with your florist that you are working with to see what flowers she can/cant get it. I wanted bluey/purple sweet peas for my wedding in August, but my florist couldnt get them.

I accidentally sprayed some of mini roses and gerbera with iron chelate powder? what should i do?

i did it about a week ago. the roses seem less affected than the gerberas. A few of them have gotten a few black spots but they seem fine despite that? the gerbera however has gotten dark discolourrations and looks really bad. the leaves have dry spots on them. i removed some of the leaves that looked beyond repair but i left the others. Should i just leave the plants for a while and let time play its course??? i think ive gone a bit overboard in my search for perfect roses and gerberas. even though i followed the instructions on the container i seem to have really botched up my plants. I also gave it to one of my plumbagos and it has shriveled up

I accidentally sprayed some of mini roses and gerbera with iron chelate powder? what should i do?
this might result into mutations in the plant....may show polyploidy...may be responsible for deletions, insertions, transversions, etc. in the plants genome.....may be possible that u get some new type of further plant progenies due to mutations
Reply:Cut EVERTHING down immediately. Otherwise, you risk harming all the adjoining plants.

How to make a boutonniere with gerbera daisies?

How to make a boutonniere with gerbera daisies?

I've found several ideas of how to make a bout with roses or other kinds of flowers, but nothing specific to gerberas. I've tried a few different ways, but it always looks odd.

How to make a boutonniere with gerbera daisies?
Gerber daisies are really big, which is why they usually aren't used for boutonnieres. Why not just use a single Gerber daisy in the lapel and not worry about adding to it with greenery and all that as it might get too big for the lapel. Take the green florist tape and wrap around the stem til it gets the right thickness. Pin it with a straight pen. I think the groomsmen would be much happier with that, instead of something that is kinda massive.
Reply:They are large. Just with some maidenhair fern I guess would work.
Reply:Do We really have to hear this!
Reply:Since gerbera's are so large on their own, probably it would be best to just use a single bloom for a bout. Anything else might look strange and overdone. Try theknot.com though - they have pictures of everything you could imagine!
Reply:Unless you can find some variety of smaller or mini gerberas, I think they may be too big for a bout. It may end up looking like a corsage instead.

Roses, alstromeria, carns, etc. work better b/c they are not so big. Even if you are using gerberas in your bouquets, it will look fine to have the men wear something else.

You might even use regular daisies for them, that would blend really well with the gerberas.

How do you rid squirrels from destroying flowers?

Squirrels are destroying my gerbera daisies, what can I do?

How do you rid squirrels from destroying flowers?
Get a bag of dog hair from your local groomer and spread it in the garden. That has stopped squirrels from uprooting my garden. Squirrels dislike dogs and will avoid the area.

Potted Gerbera daisies.?

My potted flowers originally had 3 daisies. And those have now died and new ones are growing. How do I cut the dead ones off?

Potted Gerbera daisies.?
Either pinch them off or use hand clippers.
Reply:Thanks! Report It

Reply:Clip at the base of the head of the flower. I had a pot of Gerbera daisies last spring/summer they are beautiful and rebloomed constantly.

How do I grow gorgeous Gerberas??? And when do i start??

I LOVE Gerberas... but whenever we try to grow them, they always turn far more limp looking and droopier, and the colours aren't as vibrant as the ones you see in the shops. why is this so?? are there any particular types of Gerberas i should look out for? and when is the right time to plant seeds for them??

How do I grow gorgeous Gerberas??? And when do i start??
conditions ! that speaks volumes for any plant .

i don't know your area but lets assume your in the right area , if your gerbera heads are limping because of age and time , cut the heads and propagate the seeds into a seed tray -- 1 part loam - 1 part sand - and 1 part vermiculite --- cover with plastic with a couple of sheets of newspaper ina warm area out of the sunlight --- and you can do the rest as the seedlings raise .

but the gerbera heads must be 'fresh' for the best results . good luck .
Reply:You need to use fertilizer in the soil to get better growth. You plants the seeds in the spring after the last hard frost as soon as the ground can be worked.

Does anyone know a natural remedy to get rid of gnats and spider mites in house plants?

my house plants keep getting weak and some have died. right now i have mini roses with mites, gerbera daisies and schizanthus with gnats and their larvae. I know the gnat larvae feed on the plant roots, so i think these are mainly the ones that are weakening my plants. I keep these plants in my house and balcony. I would rather not use pesticides, so I'm looking for a natural way to kill them or prevent infestation in the future.

Does anyone know a natural remedy to get rid of gnats and spider mites in house plants?
Spider Mites: A 3% oil spray, pyrethrum dust, or a spray of onions and hot peppers may be used. Ladybugs are their natural enemy.

Gnats: try planting some sassafras near the flowers, or henbit or pennyroyal.
Reply:Hello K. There are three natural insect repellants. One is easy- soapy dish wash liquid/water sprayed with hand sprayer. Should get rid of gnats and aphids. Secondly boil garlic cloves in water, and spray garlic water on insects. Thirdly soak cigarette stubs in say a couple of pints of water, and use this on mites. Lastly if all else fails you can get a natural Pyrethrum spray from garden center. Good Luck!
Reply:I'm not sure how to deal with parasites in the roots, but I use two different things.

For some plants, soapy water...dish soap is fine.

Or...tobacco. Soak some cigarettes in water for a couple of days...drain, and spray the infusion on the leaves.

With both methods, be sure to rinse the plants well after two or three days, or as soon as the little troublemakers are gone.

How do I save my gerberas?

I have these gerberas in a plant box for a couple of months now. They have been healthy and blooming until last week i noticed that the leaves have become very soft and the flowers have wilted (even those that just bloomed).

The environment didnt change and I still water them regularly (once a day or every two days, depends if the soil is till moist).

For sunlight, they are not exposed to direct sunlight except for the morning sun.

Thanks.

How do I save my gerberas?
water them

Do gerbera daisies come in purple?

if you find a pic or a link, please include it! Thanks!

Do gerbera daisies come in purple?
there are silks that come in purple but you can easily change the color of white gerbers simply by adding a touch of food coloring to their water! go to the flower shop and buy one or two white gerbers, mix a drop or two of food coloring to make purple and add it to the flower's drinking water, you should be able to see a change in color very quickly!

you can also purchase silks in beautiful shades of mauve, to royal purples!

good luck!
Reply:They do come in purple, but it has a pinkish hue to it.
Reply:Not sure, but I know

they come in HOT PINK
Reply:I don't believe they come in purple, the darkest they come in is a deep reddish color. They do have them in silk.

Reply:Unfortunately, no they don't come in purple. I used to grow those. Unless you're willing to go the artificial route. I've seen them in purple at craft stores:

Edit: I forgot to mention - I don't know what your budget is but there are florists who dye flowers. They can dye the white gerberas purple.
Reply:They come in many colors! and you could definitely find them in purple. Go to your local florist and they will show you different shades of purple.
Reply:I haven't seen any dark purple gerbera daisies, the deep red looks purple.

But you can have the florist spray any flower any color you want so just ask around!

I found a picture of a gerbera daisy listed as "purple!"
Reply:My Aunt was a florist and I used to work in her shop.

You can spray white daisies any color you want.

They come great and we sold tons of them at

Reply:Yes, I do believe that they come in purple. Here are a few pictures that I was able to find. Hope it helps :)

Reply:Sorry, I found it highly amusing that people on here do not know the difference between a regular daisy and a GERBERA DAISY. I know that sounds rude, but they didn't answer your question accurately. Since this is my favorite flower I know they do unfortunately do not come in purple. The closest you could get is dark pink. Please, please do not get spray painted daisies...so tacky. That really was a great questions! Cograts!

What can I do to make gerberas last longer?

I buy gerberas from the supermarket all the time. They look great for the first 2 days then they begin to die. So they last me about 3-4days. I change the water frequently. I put the "plant food." I cut the stem diagonally and under water. I don't know what else to do. Is it because it’s from a supermarket and not a flower shop? What can I do to increase their life span?

What is the best way to care for gerberas in a flower arrangement? (Please read details!)?

My daughter's first birthday party is this Saturday and I wanted to get pink Gerberas for the tables, but I am not the best with plants and flowers and keeping things alive... Am I completely safe to get the flowers the night before so I have less to do the morning of the party? Will they still look firm and fresh? Also - what should I put them in (besides water)...or basically, how do YOU care for flower arrangements?

Thank you!!!

What is the best way to care for gerberas in a flower arrangement? (Please read details!)?
Gerberas are notorious for being the first ones to go in an arrangement of mixed flowers. Sure you can buy them the day before the party and they will last overnight if the florist hasn't' had them for a while before selling them.

What I do is when I get them home I cut all the stems about 1" at an angle. Then if the florist has given you a packet of flower life extender then I add that to fresh warm water and immediately place the freshly cut flowers in. If you don't get the extender then you can use 7-UP or an aspirin in the water with one drop of bleach to prevent algae. Then I re-cut the flowers everyday and add fresh water.

Happy birthday to your daughter!
Reply:I always purchase my floral arrangements the day before parties or events. I keep them in the fridge overnight to keep them fresh. In the morning, I check the water and sometimes change it. I also check the ends of the stems to see whether they need a fresh cut. Some people swear by putting an asprin in the water to keep them fresher longer, but I usually just use the little preservative packetts included with the flowers.
Reply:Gerbera Daisy is no different than any other cut flowers... Just Keep it watered, and in a cool dry place (out of sunshine and away from heat) if you want a longer time than just the day with the arrangements....

It should be safe to get then the day before, provided you pick out healthy looking ones...NO brownish looking or wilted anything in the bunch..... and keep them in the air-conditioning till put out onto the tables......Happy Birthday to your daughter , good luck with your party, and Have FUN!

Gerbera daisies..Q?

do gerbera daisies hold up as reception decor? like..i was planning on putting a few in a vase on each table. i hear these stories about them being fragile and wondering if i could get some info on this!

Gerbera daisies..Q?
They hold up fine, just make sure they are some of the last things you put out when decorating. Also, use cold water in the vaces and get some of those packets of fresh flower stuff to mix in the water. Be sure that the stems are cut under running water and at an angle. They should hold up fine unless some deranged 3 year old chews on them :)
Reply:I've chosen gerbera daisies for my forth coming wedding. We are having hot pink and orange! The table arrangements will be square vases filled with them, not too tall, so the heads rest near the top of the vase.
Reply:They are fine as long as the florist uses that plastic 'straw' thing over the stem to hold them upright (you can barely see it).
Reply:I'm much like Ali V, I too am using square vases except I'm filling them with pale pink Gerberas. As longs as you keep them in the fridge, and put them in last, they should be fine.
Reply:they'll be fine as long as they're fresh, we had them for our engagement with coloured water in vases
