How do you care for Gerbera Daisies?

Do they need a lot of water , fertilizer or PH balance?

How do you care for Gerbera Daisies?
It depends on where you are growing them. They do well in full sun/partial shade.. Any fertilizer with a higher middle number will work well since that pushes blooms. Keep the soil evenly moist but do not over water, they will rot. They prefer to be water from under the leaves too since water on the leaves will cause spots easily enough. Enjoy the beauty they add to the yard or container. Take off spent blooms too so seeds don't take all the energy from the plant. Happy growing.
Reply:I never worry about the PH balance and have acid soil where I live.

They love water.

They need high pot-ash fertilizer once a month to keep blooming (the middle number on the bag)

They need full sun.

Reply:Gerbera daisies like a lot of sun however, they tend to droop in extremely hot afternoon sun. They like good drainage in the soil and do not like to dry out. Mulch heavy to keep the Gerbera from drooping. Make sure you deadhead or remove the old blossoms or the plant will stop producing new buds. I love these flowers and I have my best luck with morning sun into afternoon but drooping in hot afternoon sun.

When a Gerbera Daisy individual flower stem dies, what do you do? Cut if off & from where?

These are pretty nice plants, outside in a pot. The plant seems healthy and there are other flowers, still alive. Do you cut it off at the bottom (entire stem) or do you deadhead it like a geranium? I don't want to kill the plant -- I want it to keep blooming over and over again.

When a Gerbera Daisy individual flower stem dies, what do you do? Cut if off %26amp; from where?
As close as possible to its base. Any stalk left on can harbor disease.
Reply:if you cut the stem the roots will get more strength and new ones will come up .
Reply:Cut it off at the bottom.

How to make a boutonniere with gerbera daisies?

I've found several ideas of how to make a bout with roses or other kinds of flowers, but nothing specific to gerberas. I've tried a few different ways, but it always looks odd. Help please!

How to make a boutonniere with gerbera daisies?
I recommend using a wire wrap. cut the daisy stem off about half an inch. take the florist wire (about five inches long) and stick it sideways trough the bottom of the flower head and bend it down so that end stays. Now, wrap the wire around the flower mount and leave it hanging. Then take florist green tape and, as you tug it to make it a bit sticky, evenly roll it round and round the base and then the wire itself. Gerbers aren't a tp coice for boutonnieres because the like water. But, they are very pretty. You can also add other flowers to the wrapp and twist them alog with the gerber. Turn up the end like a candy cane and add a large pin for attaching and there you go!

Gerbera: How do I keep stems from bending?

Is there any way I can keep Gerbera stems straight? I bought some yesterday and less than 24 hours later they are all bent over.

Gerbera: How do I keep stems from bending?
I use the very thin green florists stakes and a very thin wire on the stems of the Gerbera!
Reply:tie them loosely in stakes
Reply:jumbo soda straws ... like the gourmey soda fountains serve with milk shakes ... insert each stem into one that is about 1/2" shorter than the stem.
Reply:i'm not sure if u bought a plant or a bouquet. if it's a bouquet u need a frog in your vase to support the stems. it's like a mesh or plastic piece that fits in the top of your vase. if u bought a plant u need to put some garden stakes next to the plant to help keep the stems upright, good luck=) ...
Reply:try staking them...with small poles tie the stem to the pole, or tree branch,,, i use tree braches because it looks more natural, i'm not sure what gerbera is,, ( assuming it's a type of flower.
Reply:If they have wilted over and are in the original pot they may very well need a good soaking. If they have wilted after transplanting from the pot into the ground, they will also need a good soaking, but it would help the plant immensely to trim off all the blooms. I know you bought them for the blooms but its hard for the plant to revive from shock and try to maintain its flowers too. Daisies are hardy and should bounce back pretty easily.

EDIT: A bouquet!! have you tried using drinking straws? Put the stems in drinking straws.
Reply:If you have some florist wire on hand cut a piece long enough to run along the lenght of the flower plus a little extra to shape into a loop . Place the end with the loop close to the top of the flower and run the rest along the side .
Reply:I always cut off the bottom half inch of the stem of cut flowers. Do this under water with a sharp knife. When a stem is cut and immediately exposed to air , the cells that transport water are disturbed and the water path is screwed up (technically I recall that it is called cavitation). Cutting under water is key.
Reply:Hmm...give them some time to get used to the new soil and sunlight..if this doesn't work then I'm not sure.

What is the best way to keep my Gerbera daisy blooming?

I love Gerber/Gerbera Daisys. I have about 10 plants on my back porch. What is the best way to keep them blooming? Do I cut the flowers, which I love to bring in my house, will that make it produce more flowers or will it hinder that? I can't find any info on this. Do I clip some of the leaves when they get real bushy? or just wait for them to turn brown and pull them out then. Help?!

Thanks,

Kim

What is the best way to keep my Gerbera daisy blooming?
add some bone meal and they will bloom big time. Bone meal consists of nitrogen and phosphorus which encourages flowering and greening. good luck.
Reply:In pots put fertiliser or mulch and cut off dead ones. If theyre in vases cut stems at angle and put them in boiling water (stems only) and they will last longer

Can anyone send pictures of potted Gerbera daisy as center pieces and a bouquet?

I am planning to create my own centerpieces for my wedding reception. I plan to make 15 or more centerpieces. I want to keep the Gerbera daisy in a pot. I also want to make a bouquet. Does any one have any ideas on how to make them. The wedding will be August 2, 2008. When should I plan to make the centerpieces.

This is cool--a bride made her own bouquets as well--and she give instructions.
Reply:I would be weary about using gerber daisies in your bouquet. They don't last very well and might start dropping before the ceremony. I would make sure you ask a florist about the flowers you intend to use in the bouquet to make sure they will survive and look fresh throughout your wedding and pictures. Also, making potted center pieces you could probably do ahead of time but making your own bouquet might be difficult as it would have to be done the day before your wedding and that day is pretty much the busiest day ever. Good luck getting it all done.
Reply:I had a friend make mine. She made them the night before the wedding and put them in the refrigerator. Mine were all roses which keep a bit longer. I worked in a flower shop and daisies don't keep quite as long. Seeing as it's August I'd make sure they stay in a cool place until needed---run the a/c in the car.

How do you grow gerbera daisies?

My husband and I bought a gerbera daisy plant at Wal Mart. We potted it in Miricle Grow last weekend. We live in Alabama. It's outside on our covered porch. It's been there since last Sunday. It seems to be wilting a lot. I'm not sure if were taking care of them like were supossed to. I've been watering it when it looks and feels dry.

How do you grow gerbera daisies?
Be sure to cut off any dead or dying blooms! Cut them back way down so that you don't have a bunch of empty stems sticking out! Try not to over fertalize, and give them part shade!!! good luck!
Reply:Cut off all the dead flowers including the stem. Keep out of full sun.
Reply:Gerbera daisies are like any other daisy and would much prefer to be in the ground. If you don't have a yard then you might consider getting a larger pot because they like a lot of room to grow. A good potting soil like Miracle Grow would probably benefit as well. Oh, and potted gerberas don't like it too hot so you might need to give it some afternoon shade.

Is the gerbera daisy a annual or a perennial?

I bought a few of these a few years ago and one keeps coming back every year, however, at lowes today I saw some and the pot said annual. I thought annuals only last the season...do they have both types of gerbera daisies?

Is the gerbera daisy a annual or a perennial?
They vary but most are Z8 perennial and annual in colder areas. RScott
Reply:I believe they have both types. But usually it's an annual. Annuals do only last one season. (But if they are protected throughout the winter, and depending where you live they can come back) :)
Reply:What RSct said. Mine are sprouting - yay! spring!
Reply:Gerber daisies are annual in climates where it freezes hard every year. In moderate climates they are perennial, as well as a host of other flowers that are the same. I have read that if you dig them in the fall in a big clump of soil, wrap them in damp newspapers and keep them in a basement or area where they will stay cold but not freeze, and plant them out in the spring when the apple trees bloom, you will be able to carry them over from year to year in a colder climate.

What is the average cost of gerbera daisies at the san francisco flower mart?

I am planning a wedding and want to budget for getting flowers at the flower mart. Does anyone know a ballpark average for gerbera daisies???

What is the average cost of gerbera daisies at the san francisco flower mart?
Just go ask the local flower shop.

Gerbera????

last night, i was feelin kinda bummed, so i did what every normal person does.... i went out and bought something.... a small pot of my favorite flowers, ever-- gerbera daisies!

but now, the next day, i realize i have no clue how to take care of them. i know to give them sunlight, that's a duh. but i'm always unsure of how much i need to water them.... and how often. they're 4" right now, there are 3 flowers and an additional 4 blooms that aren't even half way open. how much water, and how often?

Gerbera????
Gerbera Daisies should be considered as a short-term plant which should be replaced after 2-3 years maximum. Their showy flowers are long-lasting, and plants should be kept in a temperature range of 40 to 70°F when in flower. They respond well under bright light, with limited full sunlight exposure. Re-potting can be done in spring when dividing plants in a peat moss-based potting mix. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings. Susceptible to thrips and mites.
