They are an annual, which means they flower then die in one season. They don't like cold/frost. So a nice sunny summer is what you need.

How do you save the seeds from a gerbera daisy plant?

Gerbera daisies will "go to seed" on their own. Both the plants and the cut flowers will do this. Simply wait until this occurs, and then gather/collect the seeds. It does take a while for this to happen because Geberas are long-lived flowers. When they do "go to seed" you should collect the seeds quickly. They have fluffy little "parachutes" (smaller than a dandelion), so they will fly around all over the place with any sort of breeze or draft.

How can gerbera daisy last longer?
Good Luck these beauties are very picky and prone to rot from overwatering and die from lack of water easily. If it is for a wedding why not buy them from a vender just before the wedding and enjoy them while they last.

Need Gerbera daisies for August 31st?

I need Gerbera Daisy blooms for my sisters wedding and wonder when I should plant them so they will be ready for the wedding. Thanks for any advice you can give.

Need Gerbera daisies for August 31st?
You should have planted them last year! If you start from seed... you are not going to get a sturdy enough flower. If you buy them from a garden center, you are going to have to plant tons of them to get enough flowers.

I think your best bed at this point would be to buy them from the florist. It may actually be cheaper than buying all those plants!

Good luck! They are beautiful. They are my FAVORITE flowers! I have a ton in my backyard! (But I am sorry. I wait for them all year long.... so I am going to be selfish and not share!)
Reply:Never heard of Gerber daisies blooming in August. I thought they were finished in May or at the latest June. 'course that depends upon where you live I suppose.
Reply:you can buy them at home depot garden center////you may not have exactly what you want if you start by seed

Growing gardenias and gerbera in the midewest?

Can it be done? How to cultuvate?

Growing gardenias and gerbera in the midewest?
Both like full sun. Gardenias like acidic soil, use Epsom Salts and coffee grounds, inexpensive, effective addition. Miracle gro is always a standard for any plant.

Gerberas. Glorious. They can be potted or stuck in the ground. Quite hardy, but hard frosts will kill off folliage. They should come back as the weather warms. If you want to collect seeds to start, they need sunlight to germinate and should be used within a week or two. Older seeds aren't as viable. good luck.
Reply:Gardenias are really tough to grow in the midwest.....If you are in Zone #5 I recommend trying them inside first. By gerbera, I suspect you mean gerber daisies????...again a tough one. I've never seen them get the really long stems they are known for when grown in the midwest. I really like gardenias and substitute Hydrangea for them. They grow really large and thrive in the midwest, but remember, most species only bloom on second year wood. Instead of Gerber daisies, try any other variety....good luck
Reply:i cultivate gerbils!!!!!
Reply:My Gerbera were beautiful last year, though I had them in pots. They are only annuals in the midwest, as the winters are too cold. You could bring them in in the fall. A freak frost killed mine before I could get them inside.

Gardenias....I"d do them in pots, also. Way too cold. I've never had much luck with them. Too finicky for me.

How do you get gerbera daisies to bloom?

Gerbera daisies need to be fertilized. I use Osmocote, which is a slow-release fertilizer, available at Wal-Mart and most garden centers.

They also need plenty of sun and light soil, well areated soil. Gerbera daisies will not bloom in dense or depleted soil.

This link is a bit technical (for growers and quantities) when it comes to fertilizing, but it gives good recommendations for light, soil, pH and optimum temperatures. You can use Osmocote according to the label directions in lieu of the instructions in this site. Miracle-gro will work if you fertilize every other time you water.

Be very sure your Gerbera's do not dry out and don't keep them too wet. The watering is important, but the plants will tell you when they need it. Just watch their leaves.

I hope this helps. I love my Gerbera's and spent several years getting it right. I have several pots of them blooming right now in zone 9.

To do their best and bloom the longest, be sure gerber daisies receive lots of light. They will need a sunny location and will even profit from additional artificial light.
Reply:My daughter bought me one last year. I just planted it out in my flower bed where it gets plenty of sun. It had returned this year and has been blooming for a week or so now............

Gerbera daisies? How to make 'em bloom again?

I've been nursing a gerber daisy plant for most of the winter in my cubicle. I have a window seat and on cloudy days, I let it soak in direct fluorescent light. I've given it plant food stakes, pruned leaves, and water it frequently. Any ideas on how to encourage more blooms?

Gerbera daisies? How to make 'em bloom again?
They typically bloom for about 6 weeks, and that's it. You may need to replace it..

Tips for caring for gerbera daisies?

I've tried watering them a lot, watering them a little, putting them outside, and keeping them indoors next to a window. No matter what I do, they always die within about 2-3 weeks. Is it normal for them to die so soon? How can I get them to last longer?

Tips for caring for gerbera daisies?
Gerbera daisies need warm temperatures and full sun to partial shade. They also need to be planted in loose, well-aerated soil - if the soil is too dense, they won't grow well or could die. They should be watered when the soil feels dry - don't overwater them, but make sure you check the soil often so you don't leave it without water. Good luck!
Reply:To me it does sound like your watering them too much. I have a red one here %26amp; I leave it outside in the ground %26amp; it returns every year.
Reply:It would help to know what area you are in. I have no problem planting them outside in the Cincinnati area, and they thrive in soil that is fertile. Lots of organic matter in the soil helps almost any plant. They also do not need a lot of water.
Reply:dont feel bad. that is why they are meant to b an annual. they are nearly impossibly to take care of.....even when planted in the yard. so although it sucks. dont think ur the only one out there.
Reply:In Arkansas they thrive outdoors in an area where they get full sun. They also are perennial here.

How come my gerbera daisies are flopping over??

I bought a pot of 4 inches mini gerbera daisies from "save on food" this morning. A few hours later, I watered it and put it out on my balcony so that they get some sunlight. However, an hour after, I found that my gerbera daisies are flopping over!!!! I wonder how come they would started wilting so quickly.

How come my gerbera daisies are flopping over??
They were probably shocked by too much cold water, sunlight or heat.

If you put plants out in strong sunlight, and they were not conditioned appropriately, they will wilt to protect themselves and sometimes even die off.

Try keeping them inside for a couple of days and then put them outside in a partially SHADED area. Do NOT water them with cold water when the air temperature is VERY hot; the shock can kill them.
Reply:They were used to the cool climate in the store. When they were put outside in the sun it shocked them. The plants were not used to these extremes. When you put them outside, keep them in the shade and slowly introduce them into the sunlight. The drooping was not due to watering.
Reply:My daughter works as a trainee florist and tells me you can overwater them, think how our skin goes if we stay in bath too long. Another tip is to push a very fine length of craft wire through centre of bloom and right down stem, this gives support and is something they also do in bouquets as it enhances appearance and prolongs life. Hope this helps!!
Reply:It's the heat. Gerbera daisies, especially the potted ones, need afternoon shade. They don't like the heat.

Can a gerbera daisy live in the house through the winter?

I brought a gerbers daisy in before the frost last fall- It was growing well then just died last week[ Feb. 15]

Can a gerbera daisy live in the house through the winter?
Indoors, mist the foliage once or twice a week during the winter. Avoid misting open blooms. In our climate, they aren't usually kept over the winter, so they aren't repotted. When grown in a greenhouse, they are repotted in spring. When temperatures get much over 70ยบ, sometimes they will wilt even if they have adequate moisture. They can be brought inside in the winter, but they need to be kept cool. between 45-70 degrees

Can a gerbera daisy be dyed blue?

Or are there any pretty blue colored flowers that would be in season for an october wedding. Are hydrandras in season?

Can a gerbera daisy be dyed blue?
I use to dye carnations by just cutting the stems %26amp; putting them in food color %26amp; water it takes a couple days for them to turn..any white flower can be dyed. here is a site that tells of all blue flowers but they are different shades

http://www.gardening-tips-perennials.com...

Reply:Any white flower can be dyed blue. What you can do is when you're planting the flower put some copper sulfate in the ground around it. I have a friend whose mother planted a copper pipe in the ground instead. It gave the flower blue tips.
Reply:There are spray on dyes used on flowers. You can tint a white flower by placing it in water that has the desired hue of food coloring in it.
Reply:Thanks to hothouses you can get pretty much any flower you want. I have seen Gerber Daisies dyed blue.

What do i do to make my gerbera dasiys bloom?

i water them two times a week and its really green but no daisy in sight! i put miracle grow furtilizer today to help it

What do i do to make my gerbera dasiys bloom?
Make sure they are dry when you water them and they like full sun. They don't like to be soggy. It'll bloom :)

How much water should i feed my small potted gerbera daisy plant?

and when the bloom has wilted where do i cut the flower off at, at the bottom of them stem or right under the bloom?

How much water should i feed my small potted gerbera daisy plant?
Water your pot daily, especially if it is outside. Water it until water runs out of the drain holes.

It really doesn't matter where you cut the flower off at, though lower down the stem can keep the plant looking more tidy.
Reply:keep it evenly moist. if it is kept outside it will require more water if it is in a pot than if it planted in the ground. make sure to feed it at least every other week with a fertilizer high in phosphorous like 15-30-15 to keep it blooming good. and when you cut the dead bloom clip the stem and bloom to keep plant looking great.

Why won't my Gerbera Daisies produce more blooms?

I got some potted Gerbera Daisies about a month ago, %26amp; transplanted them into some nice larger hanging baskets. They seem to be doing well, producing new leaves, etc, but as their original blossoms began to fade, they aren't producing new ones. Their foliage looks healthy, but just no new flowers. I thought they were supposed to continue to bloom all spring %26amp; summer? I have them in nice fertilized soil, %26amp; have followed their directions for watering %26amp; sun (I only water them when their soil no longer feels damp under the surface, %26amp; they are in a spot that has full sun in the morning %26amp; early afternoon) Any suggestions?

Why won't my Gerbera Daisies produce more blooms?
If you re-potted them into a much larger pot the previously, they may be using all of their energy to grow roots and fill the pot instead of blooming. It depends on if they like to be root-bound or not but that can usually be a reason that a plant is not blooming during season. Wait till next year!
Reply:Make sure you're "deadheading"....pinching off the spent blooms. This encourages new blooms. Also, your plants need to be fed every 2 weeks using a combination of plant food and epsom salts (1 tablespoon of each per 1 gallon of water).

About how many blooms will my gerbera daisy produce?

Do I need to cut back the faded blooms?

About how many blooms will my gerbera daisy produce?
It is really hard to say how many blooms a gerbera will produce, but they do flower all summer long. Each plant will produce between 3 and 10 blooms at a time....and yes, once they are wilted, you may cut back the spent flower to encourage more blooms. Also, gerbers are some of the longer lasting cut flowers, so bring them in and enjoy them indoors as well!

Did you know you can also propagate your gerber daisies by taking softwood cuttings of them? Look at this link for more info: http://www.excite.es/search/web/detail?_...

Happy Gardening!

Reply:27 i believe, and yes, cut them back...

My gerbera daisy plant has some kind of white fuzz on its leaves and is drooping. Is it dying? How to save it?

My poor flowers are completely bent over and sad looking. I've only had the plant for a week. Although outside it's pushing 110 degrees, they are indoors and in the shade with water every other day. There is a white fuzz appearing on the leaves over the last three days. Any suggestions on how to save this plant? Or is this normal for this kind of flower?

My gerbera daisy plant has some kind of white fuzz on its leaves and is drooping. Is it dying? How to save it?
Sounds like powdery Mildew.. You can by antifungal agents at a garden center.. Daconil is a brand that comes to mind, but I can't remember if it's good for powdery mildew or not. Get a recommendation from the seller or read the directions over for use guidelines.

PM can kill gerberas, absolutely. Fungus is bad this year because of lots of humidity and heat.. hope this helps.
Reply:That is a fungal infection. Try spraying it with some sulfur and leave it out to get some air. Don't overwater it. In fact, it may even have developed root-rot. Repot in brand new soil and water less often. You may be able to save it
Reply:the fuzzy stuff is a fungus growing it is growing because you have it inside, in the shade and your watering it too much. gerbers like to be outside and they like the sun and heat, and not alot of water. once gerbers get too wet they do rott and sometimes they come out of it but usually they die. if i were you i would go take the plant outside (leave it in the pot its in now) put it in morning sun and forget about it for a few days. i needs to dry out. if it does make it--cut of old nasty leaves ASAP
