How do you say "Gerbera"?

My friend and I have this ongoing debate regarding how the word 'gerbera', as in gerbera daisy, is pronounced.

(I'll try to spell these out as they are said as best I can)

I say its "jur-bear-a"

She says, "gur-burr-a"

I did a little research and finally came to the conclusion that both are probably accpetable, however she is insistent that my way is wrong. haha this is a silly debate but responses will be appreciated.

I will award a Best Answer for a truly helpful response. Reputable interent sources to back-up your answer are even better.

Muchas gracias!!

How do you say "Gerbera"?
Well, hate to tell you this, but "gur-burr-a" is how I pronounce it, and how I've always heard it pronounced in the botany industry!
Reply:I have always heard it "gur-burr-a"

Gerbera daisies?

I purchased some fresh cut gerbera daisies for the vase on my desk at work. After only one day, they are already dying. I re-trimmed the stems and put them into water with that powder stuff when I brought them to the office. What is the best way to get maximum life from gerbera daisies? how long do they typically last?

Gerbera daisies?
I believe they were old. Mine last a week or so in a vase. All I do is put them in water in a vase, but I don't do anything special. I have planted them in pots at home, and they are very temperamental, and it's hard to make them last. I've been told that's why they are so expensive.
Reply:Try aspirin, by the way this is my favorite flower=)
Reply:They should last I would say a week or so. They definitely shouldn't be dying yet. Maybe the daisies were older than they were made out to be when you bought them. You seem to be doing all the right things. I don't know how else to keep them alive longer.
Reply:The flower heads of gerberas are very heavy so the stems may not be supporting them adequately. The filler greens usually help with this or the "straws" they use to support the stems. If you have some large, clear milkshake straws to slip over the stems this may help. :)

Gerbera help?

I have a new Gerbera plant but don't know anything about them. Where in the house do they need tobe and do they need more than water? Thanx in advance x

Gerbera help?
I bought a couple recently from a garden centre.A[apparently they originate from South Africa and the climate of the UK winter can be too hard.for them to be outdoors. I have put mine in my conservatory, as they need plenty of light. I also find they flag rather quickly if they dry out a bit,so I keep them well watered and use a feed once a week.As the individual booms fade cut the flower stem off with scissors just above the soil level. I am also told they need to be nearly pot bound to flower well,so I have resisted the urge to re pot them although the pots they are in seem a bit small for the size of the plants. They are lovely coloured large daisy shaped flowers. This is the first time I have grown them so I am learning as I go along.
Reply:Gerberas want full sun. They prefer to be planted in the ground but will grow in pots. The smaller the pot the more frequent the watering. They will let you know when they need a drink by wilting.
Reply:gerbera plant needs a little bit of sun so be carrefoul where you put it

no, but a neat trick, sprinkle table salt around plants, helps to chase these pesky critters away

Gerbera Dasies for an April Wedding? Any other Ideas?

I am planning on getting married in April 2009. I have NO idea what kind of flowers I want. I'd like to go with something in season. I love dasies and I'm pretty sure they are a year round flower. Any other suggestions on flowers? I need some guidance!!

Gerbera Dasies for an April Wedding? Any other Ideas?
Tulips will be perfectly in season and they come in such a wide variety of colours and styles!! I especially love fringe tulips and double tulips... Also daffodils!
Reply:I am getting married next Saturday (may 31st) and I am using daisies, pink gerber daisies, pink roses, and carnations. I think this could also be used in April. Go to a florist and talk with them. From my experience, they really helped!
Reply:i agree tulips are great this time of year and also very cheap because they're usually everywhere in full bloom.

Maybe lilies would be nice like Cala

Can anybody tell me that how to control the white flys in the gerbera farm?

present i am using actempride

Can anybody tell me that how to control the white flys in the gerbera farm?
I fought with those things all year last year. I finally got off the soap and alcohol mix and went with something akin to what you have. It controlled them much better.

I will tell you that I started to get them soon after I did some pruning on the suckers of my tomato plants. I guess it could have been coincidence but I plan on making a paste to brush over those exposed areas where I pinch or cut off the suckers next year.
Reply:It was my opinion that white flies were controlled simply by hosing them off the plants.
Reply:There does not appear to be a control better than what you are using.
Reply:You have not mention where on the earth you are from. However; by name you are from Indian Continent (I guess.)

Very well, white fly is very difficult to control, you have to try everything available to you. Soap solution is okay, mix with it "Neem tea". Sock about 1 kg of Neem leaves in 4 liters of water for at the list 24 hours (mother tincture - if kept properly will last for 3 to 4 months). Make about 5% solution by mixing with water and spray regularly on your plants, especially under the leaves. You may add 1/2 kg garlic cloves to the mother tincture simply by smashing them.

Make smoking arrangments by burning dried cow-dung and placing dried 'Tulsi' (Holy Basil) leaves over it. Keep it fuming amongst your plants when weather is clam and not raining . Works better.
Reply:White flies breed in continually moist soils or wet organic matter.

A better way to control them is to cover your soil with 2 inches of sand. The emerging larvae and pupae will not be able to crawl up to the surface and die.

Second idea is to set up more than several sticky traps if you are in a greenhouse, like one sticky trap per foot. The sticky traps will catch all flying insects besides the whiteflies.

Those suggestions plus the insecticide may help your problem better than just the insecticide alone.

Advice on looking after gerbera daisies?

Gerberas are often attacked by gray mold, powdery mildew, anthracnose, bacterial blight, crown and root rot.

Leaf miners, mites, aphids, thrips, and whiteflies, are also common. They are the favorite food for slugs and snails, earwigs, and mealybugs.

They are tender, but can tolerate light frosts, if kept barely moist in winter.

If grown as a house plant, give it bright light and night temperature of 60F. Divide them between February and April. Leave one to two buds for each division. Be very careful with the roots. Try to disturb them as little as possible, even if root bound in a pot.

Keep the crown dry. It will rot easily if it is wet. Build a two sided moat around the plant, so that the water and soil will not wash onto the crown. Water deeply outside the moat, then let the soil become nearly dry before watering again. Keep the old leaves picked off to prevent disease, and spray and bait for insects.

What is the best environment for gerbera culture?

Sow seeds at 13-18°C (55-64°F) in autumn or early spring, divide in early spring, or top-based cuttings in summer.

In frost-prone climates, grow in temperate greenhouses. Minimum temperature for cultivation is 5°C/ 41°F. They are half hardy to frost tender. Under glass grow in loam-based potting compost, (IJ No. 2) in bright filtered light.

Outdoors grow in moderately fertile, well drained soil in full sun.

Gerbera got a small Gerbera plant.?

I got a small Gerbera plant. If anybody knowing about Gerbera cultivation please advice me about the soil, fertilizers, water etc.

Gerbera got a small Gerbera plant.?
Gerberas can be grown as indoor pot flowering plants, otherwise they are frost tender plants, for outdoors.

I fertilize indoors every 3 weeks or so, during the growing season, and it's possible to have flowers for most of that. Don't get them too wet, as they may rot - leave the soil to dry out a little between waterings. It will be fine in a sunny windowsill, though some indirect light, during the hottest period of the day, can prevent leaf scorching. With insufficient light indoors, you get less flowers, and more leggy growth. 6 hours minimum sunlight each day is good for keeping the plant flowering.

Remove any dead leaves or flowers, as these can get infected, and cause other parts of the plant to become diseased - powdery mildew is the typical type of infection that they can get, but this can be treated should you ever get it.

In the garden, grow somewhere again with good levels of sunlight, and in soil that is free draining. Adding some well rotted compost can be good for them too, and potentially some coarse sand, if your soil has a tendency to water log.

Feed outdoors too, every 2 or 3 weeks, during summer, either with a good general fertilizer, or one that has a high proportion of K (which is Potassium). When you buy fertilizers, you'll see an N:P:K ratio, eg. 10:15:20, and this indicates Nitrogen N:Phosphorus P:Potassium K. In that example, there is a high ratio of Potassium, which is the nutrient required to make flowers on plants.

So, overall, don't get overly wet, let it dry a little between waterings, feed every 2 or 3 weeks and remove dead leaves and flowers to prevent infection. Indirect light indoors, shielding your Gerbera from harsh afternoon sun is better.

If you put it outdoors, follow a similar pattern, choose somewhere sunny and free draining. Adding some organic matter before planting can be beneficial. Occasional thorough waterings during long periods of very dry weather is better than lots of little waterings.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your Gerbera - mines got bright yellow flowers on my kitchen windowsill just now. Good luck! Rob
Reply:In zone 8 gerberas are perennial. Mine are in full sun, in the ground. As Rob mentioned fertilized (miraclegro) every 2-3 weeks.

I seem to have what I'm assuming is powdery mildew on my Gerbera Daisey's, what should I do?

Here is a home remedy you can try if in fact it is powdery mildew.. I have used it on my cucumbers and it seems to work for me. In a 1 gallon container full of water mix 1 Tbls. baking soda and 1 Tbls. dishsoap. stir gently and put into a spray bottle and thoroughly wet the plant. It wont hurt the plants. Let us know how this works for you. Hope this helps.

I seem to have what I'm assuming is powdery mildew on my Gerbera Daisey's, what should I do?
I agree to cutting off the affected leaves.

I did read something about using one part milk to 9 parts water as a spray that is used once a week. I saw it on Answers.... I'm think about trying it. Look it up.
Reply:You can cut back the leaves that have it if it is only a few. (Be sure and clean any pruners that you use.) There are many fungicides available however they are usually best for prevention rather than curing, although some can help. If possible improve the air flow around the plant, but some plants are prone to getting it. How sure are you that it is powdery mildew, not downy mildew or botrytis?

Would it be expensive/hard to find gerbera daisys in June from a florsit for a big bat mitzvah party?

As a matter of fact gerbera daisies are in bloom that time of the year. I would go to my small local grower and see if they can order them for me. Here in Pa. they run approx. 1.99 for a 4" pot. You may even try like Home depot, or Lowe's and ask for a special order which I know they can do for you if given the time. Happy planting and congratulations.

Would it be expensive/hard to find gerbera daisys in June from a florsit for a big bat mitzvah party?
No - daisies usually bloom in June. There are lots of varieties - like shasta daisies that are popular. If you are worried about timing and price - why not grow your own? April is the perfect time to start growing seedlings. All you need are some seeds, a bag of soil, a grow-light and some starter boxes for your seeds. You place 5 or 6 seeds in each box and then thin them out after they reach about 1 or 2 inches tall to the best 3. Soon you will have more daisys than you can shake a stick at. If that's indeed what you would like to do. If the flowers don't take or you forget to water them then you can still order them from a florist. Good luck and mazeltov!!

My gerbera flowers are dying on me what shall i do?

Well these plants need warmth and sunlight and a 'moderate amount ' of water....like don't soak them.

Not knowing how you keep them it is not possible to say what is wrong, but I would tell you to not over water

My gerbera flowers are dying on me what shall i do?
Place your index finger one inch into the soil. If, when you remove it, there are small red flecks you likely have a plant parasite common to gerberas.
Reply:when ever i get plants that start dying in my garden, i let nature take control and when the plant dies i find a better plant to take its place. its no good trying to win a losing battle. try using plants that are native to your surroundings. they will be able to cope with your environment much better.
Reply:Organise a decent funeral!
Reply:Without knowing where you have them planted it's nearly impossible to tell you what's going on. However it could be that you are watering them too much. I have my Gerber Daisy in partial shade %26amp; it's doing fine %26amp; it comes back every year.
Reply:silly cow put them in a flower pot
Reply:they need heat and sunlight and they also need some water not too much tho just make the soil moist so there is enough water
Reply:If your question refers to Gerbera flowers and the flowers are drooping from the stem, this is because the flower is big and the stem has weakened to be able to carry the flower upright. Florists use wire and tape to avoid the flower from drooping and to lengthen it's life, flower food is added to the water. In the home environment, make sure that your arrangement is out of direct sunlight and out of drafts. To lengthen the life of your flowers, ensure enough water and when the water starts to be cloudy, dump all the water, clean your vase thoroughly, then fill it with water, add floral food. Cut the stems at least half an inch, then return into the vase. If your question refers to the flowers of your gerbera plant, it could be that the flowers are exposed to the sun for too long. If you're in an area that gets to 100+ deg. heat, then there's your problem.

I have a gerbera daisy and it is dying, why!?? how do u care for it!?
Gerbera Daisies aren't perennials. So planting it outside won't help. Unfortunately they only last so long and then their done. Sorry.

2. water it the way it needs to be and give it plant food to bring it back
Reply:Depending on where you live, Gerberas really do better planted in the gound. They hate wet feet and because they have fuzzy stems and leaves rot very easily if over watered or left sitting in water. Check the centre and if there is new growth you might have a chance, cut back on the water. But if the centre is mouldy, bye bye.
Reply:It probably needed to be planted outside so it's roots could grow.
Reply:one of mine has done that too!!!!!! waaaa!

i may have let it dry too much /

or it may have got too much water, and got waterlogged

if you carefully, take it out of its pot , shake all the soil off its roots and replant in fresh damp compost it may recover ,

I live in Kansas City area. Will a gerbera daisy planted in ground come back next summer? Cut back in fall?

No.

You will need to lift and store. Gerbers are not able to live in below freezing temps.

I live in Kansas City area. Will a gerbera daisy planted in ground come back next summer? Cut back in fall?
No they will not. They are a annual
Reply:From Hortiscope:

"Q: I planted a lot of gerbera daisies last year. They are in full sun almost all day and did extremely well. They were beautiful. I thought they were perennials and treated them as such. I cut them back in the fall after they stopped blooming. I haven’t seen anything leading me to believe that they are coming back this year. Is it too early to be seeing any signs of life from them or did I kill them? I am extremely distressed. I am trying really hard to create perennial gardens throughout my yard because of the time involved with planting annuals each year. Any advice or information you can pass on would be great! (e-mail reference)

A: Don't get stressed out because it isn't worth it. The gerbera daisy is an annual, so unless they had a chance to drop seed, you probably will not see anything come up again. Go to my Web site at www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/plantsci/lands... for a list of annual and perennial flowers."

Sorry about that! Check your plant tags or seed packets more carefully next time when shopping. Good luck.
Reply:There are some varieties of Gerbera daisiese that are perinneals. I've seen a few different kinds in Minnesota, although they probably wouldn't last unless long in a Minnesota winter unless protected. But I would guess in KC you may have a shot at keeping them. Cut back the flower stem in the fall and you may get lucky keeping them over the winter. If you want to further protect them cover them with leaves, or grass over the winter.

Are gerbera daisies too daytime-y for an evening wedding?

Also, can gerberas be dyed to a different color?

Are gerbera daisies too daytime-y for an evening wedding?
Yes it is. Go for roses or lilies instead
Reply:I love gerbera daisies. It is true they can wilt if they are not kept cool, but a good florist will have wire to keep them up. Also, if they are quite fresh (which is another mistake people make), they can last quite a long time. I recently had a vase of gerberas that lasted over a week with daily fresh water changes. I think daisies in particular look good dyed, but I love the "natural" colors gerberas come in anyway. I think gerberas are quite fine for a night wedding. Choose a more elegant greeenery such as bear grass and/or some filler with metallic sprinkles and it will still look elegant.
Reply:Absolutley not! I am not sure about dying them, check with a florist. But, as far as having the dasies at night, the flowers match with the theme or season of the wedding, not time of day. I would say do it, what are the colors of your wedding?
Reply:Any flowers are fine any time of the day. The gerberas would be lovely for a wedding. Don't know if they can be dyed, but ask your florist what colours she can get them in.
Reply:I'd say yes
Reply:be careful with gerber's they wilt very fast. i would suggest you use a different flower.
Reply:Yes and yes.
Reply:Not for evening.

What about calla lilies, orchids, hydrangeas???
Reply:Yes, I think gerberas are more for a casual wedding....but if you like them go with it! I'm not sure about dying them, but they do come in lots of colors. BE CAREFUL, though, they wilt very fast. I was at a wedding 2 weeks ago and they had gerberas for the boutonnieres and they did not hold up. Usually I don't notice those things (boutonnieres), but I did this time because they were wilting!
Reply:my sister-in-law had purple gerbera daisies in her bouquet and it was an evening wedding and looked beautiful. She went for a wildflower type theme for the bouquets and I think they turned out perfect. Also gerbera daisies come in a lot of different colors so you shouldn't have to dye them, but if you need to then a day or two before the wedding place white (they work the best) gerbera daisies in a vase of food colored water and let them sit there untilt the day of the wedding. On your wedding day the flowers will be the color you want. This works well for all flowers but especially daisies and carnations. Best of luck.
Reply:you have to keep gerbera cool until the last minute because they wilt quickly. they can be dyed but be careful with your dress cuz sometimes the colors run. this happened to my crazy friend that wanted blue roses for her wedding..then she had a huge blue stain in the front of her dress!!! i think they are more for a day time wedding but given the right color you can pull it off. Its YOUR wedding do what makes you happy. congrats!
Reply:I think that gerbena daisies are really to informal for an evening wedding. They are a pretty flower, but just to informal. I would go with roses and other types of dramatic flowers for your wedding. Check out macys.weddingchannel.com. You will see lots of bouquets for a formal wedding. Also theknot.com is good too for that.
Reply:NO and YES. I had gerbers in my bouquet and dyed them in jewel tones for a more elegant candlelit wedding!

As in Gerbera daisy? There you go. http://www.weddingstyle.ca/Daisies-Weddi... I like the key chain.
Reply:ok, of course have gerbs in your wedding bqts. they naturally come in a LARGE array of colors. i think mixed colors complimenting your dresses would give a nice summery, bright, feeling. gerbera petals knock off easily and the heads break of easy too, so i wouldnt recomend them for boutineers though

centerpeices for tables could be small gerbera budvases or a gerbera plant. if well watered ahead of time, you could have pots of gerbs outside too, but the heads droop when they are dry so be careful!

theres just something about gerbera and polka dots that goes so well together. you could have your cake a pale version of your wedding colos, with white polka dots on it and a topper made of silk gerbs. polka dots could be incorperated into your invitations and even into the table settings

Do gerbera plants grow in zone 5?

Sorry, not well...should be at least 7. If you want to try, you'll have to bring them inside for winter, and place them where there's lots of sun!

When are gerbera daisies in season?

They should grow all summer long as long as you cut off the spent flowers. That is called "deadheading" and it removes the seeds, so the plant wants to put out flowers again.

Make sure you have them in the sun most of the day.

Arent they beautifu?

When are gerbera daisies in season?
Now - it's Winter in Australia.
Reply:Summer
Reply:All summer. Just be sure to dead-head them to keep them coming all summer, otherwise they go to seed.

What won't my gerbera daisies bloom?

They're in front of a window (although not in direct sun) and I water them like twice a week. What's the deal?

What won't my gerbera daisies bloom?
Gerbera daisies are pretty picky. First off, are they young? If they have never bloomed, it may take them 6 mos. to mature enough to produce blooms. Secondly, did you plant them from store bought seed? If not, and you used seeds from some spent flower heads from seasons past, it will not bloom. This seed has come from a "hybrid" type. The seed from these types will not bloom true to form. Only the "jamesonii" variety will do this. Thirdly, Gerbera's need alot of sunlight, preferably all day long. They may stop blooming or slow down a bit, if the temp. is over 75 degrees. They need to be fertilized every couple of weeks with a water soluble fertilizer like miracle gro bloom booster or equivalent. Also, you need to let the soil dry out somewhat in between waterings. Remember, they are a flowering plant that is native to Africa, and thrive in a drier soil. They will bloom the longest when they get strong light, are fed regularly and are kept evenly moist and warm.. Hope this answers some of your questions...

Reply:i cant keep these plants either. they are beautiful, but i just kill them, i have tried 4 times now, and i have given up before i kill another. they are too sensitive for my clumsy ways. good luck.
Reply:I have never had a problem with gerbera daisies. I stick them in the ground and they grow and bloom until winter. I dead head the blooms and they just bloom again. These plants want 12 hours of sunlight. They are true sun lovers. They also like the ground to be 60 degrees at night. If your soil has not warmed to where it holds 60 degrees, the daisy will just shiver and wait until its roots get warm. If they are in your house, they may very well be potbound. Try and lift the daisy out of the soil. If it does not yield, try to use a butter knife to lift the soil ball. If the plants roots are all tied up in knots and you cant break the roots away from the soil, your plants need to be repotted.

I accidentally sprayed some of mini roses and gerbera with iron chelate powder? what should i do?

i did it about a week ago. the roses seem less affected than the gerberas. A few of them have gotten a few black spots but they seem fine despite that? the gerbera however has gotten dark discolourrations and looks really bad. the leaves have dry spots on them. i removed some of the leaves that looked beyond repair but i left the others. Should i just leave the plants for a while and let time play its course??? i think ive gone a bit overboard in my search for perfect roses and gerberas. even though i followed the instructions on the container i seem to have really botched up my plants. I also gave it to one of my plumbagos and it has shriveled up

I accidentally sprayed some of mini roses and gerbera with iron chelate powder? what should i do?
Iron causes black spots if it is concentrated like it is in chelated iron. If you haven't sprayed the leaves with water yet do that. And then just let the plants recover--unless you really overdosed them, iron is not fatal.

Caring for a gerbera daisy?

I was just given a potted gerbera daisy and I want to keep it alive as long as I possibly can (I don't usually keep flowers very long). It sits inside under artificial light because my office has no windows. I water my plants twice a week, but I don't want to do the same with this one because I'm afraid of overwatering it. Would once a week be ok? And will it still thrive under the artificial light?

Caring for a gerbera daisy?
The Gerbera is an annual, so it has a growing seaon then dies back, but don't throw it out! It will return year after year. After it's finished blooming (it can bloom for quite a while in ideal conditions; you can plant it in your yard and it will come back.

Average Water Needs; Water regularly; do not overwater. Requires consistently moist soil; do not let dry out between waterings
Reply:Gerbs are extremely sensitive to bacteria, which causes their stems to bend. Watering once a week should be just fine. Though if you find the soil to be a little dry, another watering won't hurt it. Remember to always use fresh, clean water. The artificial light from your office is perfect, since gerbs are sensitive and don't do well in direct sunlight or heat. Also, try to keep your flowers away from any drafts, as they are sensitive to these as well.

Try to keep your gerbera daisy plant free and clean of dust!

If you would like to prolong your gerbs life even more, you could always purchase a flower preservative (ex. aquaplus). Preservatives provide flowers with nutrients and helps prevent against bacteria.

Also, if you ever choose to cut and vase your gerbs -- make sure to thoroughly clean the vase and keep the water clean and fresh. If your daisies start to bend, clean the vase, change the water, and re-cut the stems.
Reply:gerberas are so touchy. water it when the soil seems dry. once a week should be ok since it's inside. if you have a window in your office, put it as close as you can to it. a shot of miracle grow once in a while would be good.

Are Gerbera Daisies offered all year round? Are they avaialable in September in New Jersey?

Since gerbera daisies really like hot weather i doubt whether they would be generally available at that time of year or if they are if they would be strong plants.

if you are asking because you want to be able to use them in a floral arrangement or for a bouquet or something you probably could get them at that time of year because florists get flowers from all over the world.

So if this is the case I would speak to the florist and place the order well in advance as they may need to be special ordered to make sure you have them when you want and need them

They are lovely though aren't they. So cheerful looking

Are Gerbera Daisies offered all year round? Are they avaialable in September in New Jersey?
I have never seen them for sale for general planting other than in the spring months, then they bloom throughout the summer. As long as they don't get sunburned, you may be able to keep some until September, but their cycle of blooming may be complete depending on where you live. Daisies need a period of cold between blooming cycles to produce blooms.

However, I have seen Gerbera Daisies in floral arrangements from retail florists year round, so if you want some in September, you may have to buy a cut flower arrangement from a florist.

What is the best month for Gerbera daisies?

Gerbera daisies are good to grow in zones 8-10, they are perennials in mild winter climates, annuals in the colder climates. If you are planting seeds, don't sow them until you know winter is completely over, if they are plants same thing. They need full sun except for very hot areas and a moist well drained soil liberally supplemented with peat moss or compost. Plant them 12-15 inches apart, feed with a 5-10-10 fertilizer scattered around each plant, and scratching it into the soil, every other month til late fall, if you daisies are not blooming well add a little liquid feed[follow mixing directions]. These plants can be divided after they start getting crowded, in about 3-4 years or sooner if you are a green thumb-er. Happy Growing!!!!!!!!!

What is the best month for Gerbera daisies?
I would say late spring, and early summer. I think they bloom best during those months.

Question about Gerbera Daisy seeds?

This is my first post, I hope I'm doing it right.

I saved the seeds from my Gerbera daisy plants, I have tried many times to get them to grow with no luck. Does anyone know how to start the seeds? Thank you.

Question about Gerbera Daisy seeds?
Don't plant to deep -- Keep soil warm - cover with thin plastic to get humidity until they sprout. Place them in sunny window. Presto.
Reply:Hi there and welcome!

Gerbera are easy to grow IF the soil is warm enough.

They are a warm climate plant, thus suited to warm growing conditions.

Also, are you sure you have seeds and not just the fluff?

Note: 1 inch is way too deep! You should barely cover with soil and keep lighly moist till germination.
Reply:You can either start them in the house or outside in your garden in the spring.Maybe your planting them to deep.1 inch should be deep enough. If you plant the outside just rake the soil and push the seed down enough so that it's covered. Good Luck!
Reply:Gerbera seeds need light to germinate. If they don't sprout for you within 20 days, they probably aren't viable. You can also start them in spring from cuttings or dividing the root stock. good luck.

What's the difference between a gerbera and an african daisy?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerbera

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_dai...

You'll see pics of the two at the above sites. If you look at their latin names, they are very closely related, both being in the same family of plants, but they are different genus/species.

Many plants in the sunflower family look very similar, and it's hard to tell them apart unless you are a botanist or florist.

I have african daisies in my yard, and they make a nice ground cover that does well without a lot of watering.

I haven't grown gerberas, but that site mentions they are very popular as cut flowers, so they might make a nice addition to a flower garden.

My Gerbera flowers died bc there wasnt enough sun, With proper sun and care, will the flowers come back?

Yes, they should.

I have a gerbera dasiy but one of thems droop and i can't get it but up. how can i help it?

If this is a cut flower, cut a bit of the end of the stem off, and put it in fresh, tepid water. It should perk up in no time; gerberas are very good about taking up water and standing upright again. If it's a plant, just be sure that the soil is moist, and hope for the best. Gerberas will tolerate dry conditions for a while, but like any other plant, they DO need moisture.

Good luck!

if it is a cut flower stick a smell piece of thin wire through the stem for support
Reply:Could have mites, take a close look at flower very small insects, treat with miticide.

Do gerbera daisies or even regular daisies smell good? What about hydrangea?

To each his own but I don't think daisies smell good. I really don't remember hydrangeas having a strong smell either way. If you want good smells choose roses, pansies, Hyacinth or any herbal plant like mints.

Do gerbera daisies or even regular daisies smell good? What about hydrangea?
daisies can be anything from completely odourless to quite foul smelling
Reply:For daisy-like flowers with a nice scent....try one of the new Echinaceas....like the 'Big Sky' Series.....I grew 'Sunset', ...amazing fragrance. Kind of pricy...but worth it. Hydrangeas have no scent, to my knowledge. A lovely low-growing shrub with an amazing fragrance is Daphne 'Carol Mackie'. Beautiful varigeated folaige, looks great even when not in bloom. If you could use a taller shrub, try Viburnum carlesii, it's spicy and powerful.

How can i cross pollinate my gerbera to produce the best seeds?

detailed description please

How can i cross pollinate my gerbera to produce the best seeds?
The two plants that you want to crossbreed just get the pollen from one of the plants that you want to crossbreed and rub it on the stigma of the other plant which is the female part, the stigma is a white long stem growing beside where the pollen is, you can do this with an artists brush, after 3 days you will notice the seed pods getting bigger and wait until they swell up and turn yellow and dry then take the seeds and plant them and depending on the plant in about a year you will have a new plant and it will probably flower. I hope this helps.

Could anybody help me with infos about growing Strelitzia and Gerbera?

Your Bird of Paradise benefits from frequent heavy feeding. They bloom best if crowded or pot bound. Your Gerbera likes mild frequent feedings and very well drained soil. RScott

Could anybody help me with infos about growing Strelitzia and Gerbera?
RScott is correct. Birds won't bloom until they are rootbound. Gerberas are easy, like being evenly moist, will take full sun, and enjoy feeding bi monthly. Ain't dirt grand?

What's wrong with my gerbera daisy plant??

I have a gerbera daisy plant that seems to be getting worse every day. I water it when it looks like its getting dry, but I'm not overwatering it. It doesn't look like it has any fungi or bug damage.

What are some tips to keep this plant alive as far as sunlight, how often it should be watered, any fertilizer, etc. Please help!! I dont want to lose another plant!

What's wrong with my gerbera daisy plant??
Gerbera should be planted in rich well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade (in hot areas). Full sun is best for more flowers production. Plant the crowns above the soil level, too deep will invite crown rot. .

Water early in the day and allow it to dry slightly between watering. Avoid overhead watering. Improper watering and poor drainage will lead to problems such as crown rot and poor flower production. Some sources say to fertilize monthly others every two weeks during the flowering period (spring and summer). Maintain the plant by removing spent flowers and old leaves.
Reply:The previous answer is very good. Also, gerbera daisies are native to South Africa, so keep that environment in mind when dealing with these nice bloomers.

Gta vice city mp question

My potted gerbera daisies are wilting and the leaves are turning grayish and brittle. Help!?

It has been pretty dry here in the Chicago area, but I water daily. I think it might be some kind of a disease but I sprayed a disease/insect treatment about a week ago and it seems to be spreading from one pot to another now. Any advice?

My potted gerbera daisies are wilting and the leaves are turning grayish and brittle. Help!?
When kept indoors, gerber daisies like bright, filtered light. If using them as an outdoor potted plant or a bedding plant, plant gerbs in a location with partial shade, preferably an area that is hidden from the hot afternoon sun. When the daisies are blooming keep soil moist, not wet. During non-blooming allow the top of the soil to become dry between waterings. If you are using your gerbs as a bedding plant be sure to plant them so the base of the plant is just above the soil line, as they are prone to crown rot. This can be taken care of by removing old leaves regularly to prevent fungus infections developing. The plants generally don’t do well indoors after their last blooms have gone. Good luck:)
Reply:maybe too much water. web site says to let soil top dry before watering

My gerbera daisies have all died. What did I do wrong?

I bought the plant with 3 full, colorful daisies. I somehow killed all 3 of the flowers. I just plucked the last one today. Will they come back or do I have to wait until next Spring? If there is a possibility of them coming back then what should I do? Thanks a bunch!

My gerbera daisies have all died. What did I do wrong?
Not to worry! Those should bloom again, all summer for you, but you might not have a bloom every day. As long as the leaves have not turned yellow or brown, or withered, you still have a healthy plant.

Things gerberas do not like are excessive cold, excessive heat or wet feet. They like to be watered but not left in a puddle for too long. Aside from that they are not temperamental. When the blooms start to fade, deadheading the flowers will encourage more blooming. Why, that is exactly what you did!

Good luck to you.

What color gerbera daisies should I use?

I'm getting married in July and wanted to use gerbera daisies. My bridesmaids are going to be wearing a clover green color. What color gerbera daisies would look good with this color dress? Also, what are some good accent flowers for gerberas?

What color gerbera daisies should I use?
*I love gerbera daisies!!

*I think white or yellow would look good with the green

*Maybe the bouquets could be all one color or mixed with two colors (same flower)

*see if the florist could dye your flowers to match the green that the bridesmaids are wearing. If so, maybe you could have a green and white bouquet

*as for the accent flowers, maybe chrysanthemums(sp??), alstromerias, peonies, or even roses may look nice with the daisies

*congrats and good luck!

Are Gerbera Daisies hardy flowers?

I live in Las Vegas. I don't really have a green thumb. I would, however, like to have some kind of potted flower on my Westward facing bedroom windowsill (inside) to brighten up my bedroom. These are my favorite flowers and I'd like to grow them in my room if it's possible.

Are Gerbera Daisies hardy flowers?
They should do just fine in your bedroom. They don't need to be hardy. Since Las Vegas is dry, you may need to spray them about once a day with a light mist of water.

When you buy them, ask the clerk for some appropriate water soluble fertilizer and follow the directions. You can usually just feed it at half strength unless it's actively flowering in which case you can give it the regular amount. But don't give it too much fertilizer or you'll kill it. If you don't have a green thumb, it may be best to go with an organic fertilizer. They're not as concentrated and are less prone to mistakes. But just go half strength about every two weeks and you'll be fine. Just read the label for how often to fertilize.

When they don't have enough water, Gerbera flowers will lean over. Just give it a little water and it will perk right up. When the flower starts to change colour and either, just clip it at the base with a clean pair of scissors and a new flower should come up to take its place in no time.

Don't be scared of trying out a potted plant. All they really need is some water, a little food, sunshine and some attention from you. I'm sure your plant will do great.
Reply:My gerberas are perennial Zone 8. They prefer full sun or a south facing window and being planted in the ground as opposed to potting them. Try coleus. Super easy and colorful - not frost tollerant, but you can overwinter them inside. Root in water for perpetual plants.

Try impatiens, begonias, ferns, for inside interest in your west window. Have fun.

How do I remove mildew from the leaves of my Gerbera daisy plant and why did I get mildew in the first place?

Mildew should just rinse off with water on a plant. But....I would guess that it must be in too humid of an area if mildew is forming in the first place. Could it be a fungus?

How do I remove mildew from the leaves of my Gerbera daisy plant and why did I get mildew in the first place?
1. Use a general purpose fungicide for spraying on the leaves. Neem oil is good for this purpose.

2. Do not water the plants overhead. Only water in the soil, not on the leaves. Powdery mildew (the white mildew most likely on your daisy) happens when you water improperly. Most plants like to have water only in their soil, not on their leaves.
